Remenda agenda: Popular Sharks TV analyst is back

Drew Remenda will be back as the Sharks TV analyst next season, and nobody sounded happier about it Wednesday than his broadcast partner, Randy Hahn.

"The Joe Thornton trade and bringing Drew back - those would be the two biggest no-brainers in Sharks history," said Hahn, the Sharks' play-by-play announcer.

The team and Fox Sports Net Bay Area announced Wednesday that Remenda and Hahn will be reunited in the broadcast booth, where for six seasons they provided lively coverage that appealed to both hard-core and casual hockey fans.

The partnership ended in May 2006 with a dramatic, on-air announcement that came moments after the Sharks were eliminated from the playoffs by the Edmonton Oilers: Remenda was leaving to spend more time with his wife and three children at their Saskatchewan home.

Remenda, an assistant coach for the Sharks during their first four seasons, said Wednesday that he'll still be making the San Jose-Saskatoon commute for the next two years until his 16-year-old daughter graduates from high school. But his family plans to spend more time in San Jose, even if it means missing a day of school now and then.

Remenda sees the new arrangement working better.

"This time we talked about it," Remenda said in a phone interview from Saskatoon, crediting his wife, Michelle, for making the return possible. "This time we said, `OK, what do you think?' We had long discussions."

Remenda, 45, said the decision had the support of his daughter and 10-year-old twin boys.

Money was also a consideration, he said. Remenda wouldn't disclose the financial specifics of his new three-year contract, but said the Sharks "made a hell of an offer."

Remenda spent last season in a secondary role with the Hockey Night in Canada broadcast team. But the role didn't call for the same free-wheeling style that won him so many fans in San Jose, and changes in the executive ranks there meant he wasn't assured of a job next season.

"I don't think I was as good a Drew Remenda with Hockey Night in Canada as I was with the San Jose Sharks," he said Wednesday on KNBR.

Remenda will also be back as host of "Shark Byte," a 30-minute, behind-the-scenes feature program also carried on FSN Bay Area.

The Sharks hired former NHL enforcer Marty McSorley as Remenda's replacement. McSorley's time in that role ended mysteriously midway through the Sharks' playoff series with Detroit when the Sharks announced McSorley would not return for a Game 3 broadcast for personal reasons. No further explanation has been given.

In Wednesday's announcement, Sharks director of broadcasting Frank Albin called Remenda and Hahn "a perfect fit" and Hahn looked at it in much the same way.

"In broadcasting, it's the c-word - chemistry - that translates into viewers," Hahn said. "Drew's willing to have fun, and fans would feel like they were on the inside because they knew what Drew and I were joking about."

Did Marty sucker punch Randy in the back of the head? That would be consistent with his pussy faced attitude towards the sport. I hated him and am very glad Drew is back.

Though I have to say that during the last round of our playoffs, every time Drew came in to be a guest announcer we lost :teeth

You always need a scapegoat!! Two years ago it was Mike Rathje :finger, and this year it was a combo of Drew and Marleau.

I thought they won the first game he came back for and then they were on VS, lost 2 and then Drew came back for another and they lost that one too.

Let's hope then that Patty AND Drew learned something from the early exit last season and reward us deserving fans!:cool

I couldn't agree more. I hate to say it, but Patty doesn't deserve to wear the "C" this year. And as far as Drew goes, he didn't curse us with his commentary when he was a regular, so hopefully with most of our 2006-2007 "perfect team" we can do something this year. I just hope we either don't make it to the playoffs this year, or make it and decide not to choke on a fat one.

And finally(sorry, none of my friends like discussing hockey), I'm glad Hannan is gone. I've conversed with him a few times at my gym, and man, what a prick.

I know a lot of people like him, but I am glad I won't have to listen to him very often.

He is better than most, but compared to high quality color guys, he just seems kinda 'dumbed-down' to me. Never got to watch much with Marty (I left in Nov sometime).

His Shark Bytes were great though. And him and Hahn work together well.

I think a good captain would be Rivet, that dude stepped up bigtime (minus the one boo boo in the playoffs) and he definately helped the youngins out tremendously in the short time he was with the team. If not the c, at least give the dude an A cuz he's awesome. Hannan was a good d-man, but he just sorta had been drifting off lately, I wish him all the luck in Colorado, but he's gonna get pounded when we play em. :teeth

Dude, you didnt miss much. He started to get a lil better toward the end of the season, but in all honesty the guy just was blah to me.

Marty was horrible. He would just ramble on about nothing, kind of like Jon Madden :teeth And what is guys name who does the on ice interviews? I forget his name; the bald guy. Anyway, he is a complete moron and I have no idea how he got that job.

And yes, I would be happy with Patty getting an "A." Maybe Joe, Cheech, or Kyle for the "C." All good people on and off the ice, and from all I have experienced first hand/heard, very good to the fans.

I can't help but be in love with Tie Domi :love :love

Domi is the man! (Or was the man).

I still laugh when I remember that fight he had with Brashear in a Toronto-Philly playoff game. Or that drunk fan who fell into the penalty box and got his clock cleaned. :laughing

I like the new logo. Looks a little more fierce, plus it was time for a bit of a refresh.

I miss hockey. :(
