Bay Bridge cable snaps

Obviously G Dub had nothing to do with this. Clearly, it was Obama's fault.

+1 on the "I am glad I don't take the Bay Bridge but once or twice a year" comment. That whole thing is going to collapse one day and a LOT of people will die or get injured in an instant.

If you have seen the show on Discovery, all of America's infrastructure is at risk. Most of it was built back in the 40's and 50's and had basic maintenance until now. The problem is the structures typically have life spans of only 50 years. So it's at the point where maintaining is no longer a preventative measure for failure. The stuff needs to be replaced. Remember that bridge that fell in Minneapolis? Exactly.

But ducky, massive government subsidized projects to rebuild our failing road infrastructure is socialism!

We'll end up just like SWEDEN. With BRIDGES. Do you want to live in Sweden with bridges? DO YOU??? :cry

Oh btw, now they have all sorts of cones and Road Closed signs blocking off the bridge right at the TI exit, but the traffic up until that point is pretty much unobstructed. When I went to 2nd and Bryant there was no line at all this time, and the entrance ramp was open.

I want to live in France with that badass viaduct that they built in three years, for about $500 mil.

Or at least hire those guys to redo the BB.

I just realized how bad azz of a picture it would be to take a photo of your bike on the bridge with no cars...that would be the most awesomeness picture ever, LOL

That would be pretty sweet. A once in a lifetime photo really if one could get it done. I would want a shot of the bike at a 45 angle on a rearstand right in front of a westside tower. A nighttime shot of that with the tower and sf skyline as a backdrop would be sick.

My thoughts on this incident have been more along the lines of "what if I'd been riding there when the saddle failed" though. Sorta sketchy.

All those stuck commuters can thank Porkbarrel Willie Brown for this one... the new bridge would have been done a year ago if not for his heightened aesthetic sense and insistence on cutting all his thieving political allies in on the deal.

I, for one, appreciate a heightened aesthetic sense. What's wrong with building a world class structure?

I was thinking the same thing, too bad I'm out of town or I would have tried to get some pics. :(

My previous bike/bridge pics haven't turned out that great though.

It's kinda fun! They've put a lot of orange cones out there now to tell people to just stay in the middle lane... but now I just want to play in them. :)

I've stolen them on my foot before.

But choose wisely...You can either use your rear brake, or shift.

I chose poorly, and had to ride a few miles stuck in second gear...

Good thing we are in the middle of a Depression.

Who says we are in the Middle? That Implys that recovery is in-place.

Has manufacturing, making things, and paying American Workers, to make things that both we and the rest of the world pay for, happened or will happen? Has Obama delivered on his Campaign promise to clean up crooked government and Wall street/Business? Notice any securing of our borders?
Notice anything that gives hope?
China give us an extention on our dept? Anything?

Preach it.

Wow, someone else that is as negative as me. :laughing I agree, it's going to be painful for a while. The magnitude of our current situation rivals the great depression. Hold on, kids, this could be a bumpy ride.....

Try forever. Our government is not going to do what is needed to bring manufacturing back to America, namely tariffs. We allow multi-national corporations to set up shop in nations with no environmental and/or safety standards and 'pass the savings to the American consumer'

We cut our own throat.

FWIW, this bridge was built in France for a fraction of the Bay Bridge retrofit. I think it was done in 4 years. Public/private partnership.

What's happened to California?

If thats anything like French cars, I'd wager its not gonna last 20 years.

I will make a guess. The repairs on this old section will work, but something nearby will brake. This will be an ongoing multiple brake and repair project for the next 4 years.

In this case, the wrong was 3-5 years of delay/increased build time plus a 200% price increase.

Given the choice, I'll choose the delay/cost for something that is a landmark every time.

How much money has the likeness of the Golden Gate Bridge generated over its life?
