In Search Of Dry Land In The Desert

Just got a chance to actually sit down and read through this thread.

Thanks, boney! Have you ever been up there? You'd really like it out there. Last night Eric and I spread out a bunch of maps on the floor that had a 700-mile dirt route from Utah to northwest Nevada :teeth

HA! Since I don't really have a full-on street bike, didn't know if they'd let me in here - :teeth cool site.

Hey, I've only got the SV for commuting but they haven't kicked me out yet :teeth BARF is pretty fun :)

Of course! Glad you like and yes, Eric needs one too!

Yeah, he does, but he can't tear himself away from those $10 army surplus bags :laughing I gave him a ration of shit when he first got them ("Yeah, they're ok, I guess...for your LC4, maybe. They are NOT going on my Husky, though :x " but I gotta admit, they've been bulletproof and they hold a ton of crap! The rolltop waterproof liners were totally cool!

I wish we knew the route, water and snow will determine that but we have some ideas for sure. We're going to spend at least one night with the good folks at Soldier Meadows and might rip around there for 1 day. I know of a cool cabin with a cold spring south and east of there for another night but we really do not know where we're going to end up.

Those the best kinds of plans/routes to have, really. That way, nothing gets messed up by weather or accessibility. You've ridden High Rock, right? If not, it's beautiful right now and so close to SM.

We'll get some riding together someday - :ride

"Someday" isn't going to come soon enough, Wox. We need to consummate this affair! :party

I've ridden around up there, but not nearly to the extent that you have.

I think I even have a picture that looks just like one of yours. Let me see if I can find it.

Well, it's close anyway. Taken in 2008 from a different angle of the same mountain:

The maps you have part of the TAT? Someday I'm gonna ride the western section.

Chocolate banana shake!

Hi WoodsChick,

Thanks for this wonderful ride report, really enjoy your
photos & writing ... :thumbup

Crazy weather ...

Hope to find my way to a
bacon cheeseburger, at least, soon ...

see you around the campfire,

Once again the Woods(MountainRange)Chick shows us what the world looks like outside our comfort zone.:hail

And, yeah, Nemo, I concur...I think you could do High Rock but I wouldn't do it alone. The problem is if you have any issues out there you're a long way from help. High Rock is fairly close to Soldier Meadows, but a lot of the other stuff I rode is a long ways from nothin'. Go do it, girl!

Wox!! What a cool surprise to see you here in BARF-land! :applause Welcome! Didja notice the GiantLoop on my KTM :teeth I really like riding with that thing...I think Eric needs one for his KTM.

WoodsChick

Hell yeah! I picked up a SPOT and a Giant Loop for the 'laska trip, and both should come in handy for desert adventures, too. My riding buddy is getting up to speed, too...and the Benchmark Atlas is close to my bed!

Looks like a great trip despite the snow and soggy ground. Some of those canyon photos were breathtaking. You seem to have "secret knowledge" of hot springs - or a good guidebook?

Man, what a ride you did. I want to do it someday!
Good report :)

Get on out there and do it now, Kfxrider90! Time waits for no man :)

No, no secret knowledge and no guidebook, just a healthy curiosity and the good fortune to spend a good portion of my time out looking around. I am also a "map and compass" person and therefore do not rely on getting GPS tracks from others. I can see a lot more of the terrain with a good map than I can with a GPS. Water is very important to my happiness and I seek it out whenever I can, whether it's warm water or cold :teeth

High Rock Canyon was pretty breathtaking, for sure. I knew it was going to be a short section, just from looking at the map, but I was totally left wanting more at the end of it. I'd like to ride through it with my camping gear and hiking boots next time.

Hey Woodsey - just got back, 1800 miles of action. Yes, you were right about the snow but we did the same thing and searched out the elevations that kept us under the snow and (for the most part) out of the swamps. HA!

WoodsChick this is like a vitamin shot.

Thanks so much for taking the time to put all these pictures here. So many people think there is "nothing" in the desert or high desert, but your pix disprove it over and over. I am sharing this with non-moto friends because I think its such a great essay.

Thanks, Bay Arean! I've done quite a few reports here on BARF containing the words "in the desert." I guess I should consider changing my name to DesertChick :laughing

As far as photo essays go, I am but a rank amateur with a camera I don't really know how to use. If you want to see how it's really done, check out Wox's recent report over on ADV...

Wox was my inspiration for getting out of the trees and into the wide open deserts and I will be eternally grateful to him for it :)

Thanks for checking it out!

Well, the PS is that I work at a newspaper and the staff photographer (who does a lot of nature shots and even sells 'em at fairs and stuff) and our web designer (who paints and sells mostly still lifes of flowers) looked at all your pix yesterday and loved 'em. So, pro or not, you relayed the beauty of the place and the coolness of the overall adventure. The photog says he's ready to go there now! Thanks for other links.

This is really fantastic stuff.

Would you be willing to do a "Offroading Preparedness" thread? Or do you have any links that go over the basics? I do a lot of prep for trackdays and racing, and I'm staying close to home and medical care...I'm quite interested to see what you do for being out in the middle of nowhere :)

Thanks for posting and sharing, as always.

Just read your report and love the pictures - awesome account and HUGE motivation to try something like this in the future.
