Anticipation, the acquired 6th sense

Its rough out there .. You gotta expect the unexpected .. Situational awarenes has to be at an all time high .... I just assume every car doesnt see me, do my best to think ahead and catch everything .. I pray it continues to work out .. I dont mind crashing on the track at all but on the streets its not the crash that usually kills a rider its the cars, trucks and stationary objects ..

Theres no airfence on I80 or I5 ... keep that in mind ..

Good topic. Didn't see it the first time around. I should visit here more often.

I'd like to add that one can anticipate a lot more than just road conditions.

I often anticipate that some fellow road user is going to do something that would put me in danger, and am able to act before it happens instead of reacting after it happens.

This is done by reading sometimes extremely subtle cues from the other driver. A quick glance in the mirror, turn of the head, conflicting messages like turn signal going on, then off...
Sometimes, it's just a feeling I get; what's the worst thing that driver could do in relation to me right now? I'm expecting it, and they do exactly that.

This is one of the effects of several decades of public road riding, and I'm not sure it can be taught.

I have a feeling that everyone would benefit from watching and analyzing this go pro vid from me riding in germany. Really shows how fast shit happens

In general the 6th sense as many have already stated is nurtured. I posted Anticipating the Darter as a way for others to express their riding style and methods hoping others including myself could improve in while on the street.

Constant Scanning, constant adjustment, constant examine of escape route for every move or new cage in view... I was thinking the other day if I had a GoPro and Narrated my ride and thoughts .... I would probably be sent to the loony bin.

But in all seriousness, I talk to myself as I ride examining the the points of possible harm as well as best safety. Seeing to the side, further ahead and right in front, side and rear is like looking at a panoramic photo. In my head I see virtual red arrows

6th sense IMO is acquired, nurtured and developed

There are parallels between traffic sense, chess sense, and basketball sense, etc. - position, tempo, anticipation. In each game you study, practice and refine these skills the same way.
