I just got a Joe Rocket Phoenix 5.0 for summer riding. I based my decision for that jacket mostly because it came in Tall sizes AND in a color other than completely black. The length is great, waist cinches down enough and shoulders are perfect. Chest and belly area are a bit loose due to me being skinny for my height. A size down would definitely be too small in the shoulders. The way I see it, I can either start eating at Five Guys all the time and the Jacket will fit perfectly in a month or two, OR, I can take up the slack by rocking some extra protection :thumbup.

I was thinking the Icon Stryker vest would do the trick but just wondering what else I should consider. Are there any that have longer back pieces for us above average blokes? Also the offerings from EVS seem to be more or less the same but for $30-$50 cheaper. Or in that same price range there's the Teknic Speedstar, Astars Bionic, and Spidi Back Warrior EVO spine protectors.

Thoughts?

Of all the armor options I have seen, the Astars Bionic2 jacket has the longest spine guard of the lot, and it is removable from the rest of the armor if you just wanted to wear a spine guard. The Icon Stryker is a little more flexible than the A* in terms of movement, but I am 5'9'' and the medium Icon stops about 2 vertebrate short of my pelvis while the medium A* covers nearly to my tail bone. The down side is that for the Astars you pretty much only get black with a little touch of red around the edge, so it doesn't quite meet your color request. You could do what my wife did with her's and paint it after the fact. We painted her spine protector the Stella-purple that Alpinestars used on the women's models of the Bionic2 and it turned out pretty awesome.
