What:

Riding just inland from the coast to get to Stewart's Point for lunch - choose your own route back.

Where:

Big Rock Mini Mart, Lucas Valley Road, San Rafael

KSU:

8:30 AM PDT

Stops:

Not many. Stop at the Tomales bakery for a snack en route. No gas on this route until Stewart's Point. Show up with a full tank, and have at least 100 miles of range.

Route:

A little bit on Hwy 1, but not much. This route is an f_h standard, so if you've ridden with me before, you've probably ridden this. It takes a while for this route to get goaty, but once it does, it's pretty serious - though paved - goat. Blind turns, no center line, very narrow, drop-offs, sand in the corners, cattle on the road, some risk of bubblegum, and lots and lots of bicyclists. If any of this gives you heartburn, this isn't your ride.

After lunch, you can head back however you want. Some may want to head east and bag Skaggs, others may want to ride down the coast, and there's always the possibility of looping up Kruse Ranch to get above the fog.

Was nice out today, we made the way up 1 to Skaggs.

Road great, little cold. Clean, nothing to worry about, until the last stretch of 1 coming to Skaggs.... the road has a weird hump down the center of the lane. Once you get used to it, not a big deal, but hit it a few times in a good lean .... you get a special wiggle on it.

If you do Skaggs, we had a light bit of gravel in the goat parts... but nothing major to worry. Main Skaggs road was BEAUTIFUL. Super hot though, 85 ish, and was in the 50s on the coast all the way up.

Enjoy.

Thanks for the scouting report, Bryan. :cool

Cool! You know the route! :ride

The Warriors are playing at 12:30! I'm still down for the ride, but I may need to duck out a bit early.

See you in a bit.

We rolled out at 8:47, but didn't complete the planned ride. Too many distractions. :laughing Hope you got your bike sorted okay.

F H, how do you deal with all the traffic on the coast on the way back in the afternoon? I've done that ride many times and still have a hard time finding a better route back to the bay area without taking the 101 back.

This is where my affection for goat trails really pays off. There are lots of little roads just inland from the coast that can be stitched together to form really fun rides, and that's where I stay. From Leggett in the north to SLO down south, there are tons of little roads between 1 and 101, and they include some very entertaining roads. For instance, Coleman Valley and Joy Road can be used to get around the CF known as Bodega Bay.

Nice ride! The weather was great and there were quite a few bikes out at the bakery in Tomales.

Well do the whole route after the NBA finals! Thanks for getting me out Kurt.
