AGV Pista GP R Carbon Helmet - NO SNELL RATING???!!!

Hoping this is the appropriate place for this post. I'm interested in getting the AGV Pista GP R Carbon as my track day helmet but just found out that this helmet does not carry a SNELL rating. So is this a dealbreaker? Once I get beyond the Novice/C Group will this helmet not work? Hoping to hear from track day providers on this one. Thanks in advance for the help!

I believe most TDPs will accept ECE helmets

Thanks for the quick response Junkie! Certainly good to hear, but hoping to hear directly from 1 or 2 TDPs just to be sure.

PTT accepts ECE helmets.
So does Sonoma Raceway Drag night.
I'd be leery of any track day company that only accepts Snell helmets.
That means they are run by uneducated morons.

I have one

It's a great fitting helmet. I am an exact 58CM and wear the Pista GP R M/L. It is prone to fogging. I have 1 clear with pinlock, 1 med smoke with pinlock. 1 clear no pinlock, 1 med smoke no pinlock. Im at day 20 this year with 15 more this year. No one has ever said a word. If it's good enough for Valentino (instrumental in it's design), It is certainly good enough for my slow ass. JMHO, YMMV

Hi 'muck. What's the best way to get a TDP to answer a question? All together now:
"Ask the TDP!"

Here's a good list.
service@z2trackdays.com
keigwins@thetrack.biz
michael@pacifictracktime.com
info@funtrackdayz.com

Your helmet is good to go.

Thanks for the response jaybee! Out of curiosity have you installed a Bluetooth communicator onto your Pista?

There's a long standing debate as to whether the Snell rating is actually a good thing. The way they test the helmet isn't realistic and actually forces manufactures to create stiffer helmets. The ECE rating is more real world realistic.

If a TDP wasn't to accept an ECE helmet, they would probably make you tape over your plastic headlight covers, too. And require leathers with no expansion panels. And rock a mullet and acid washed jeans.

This is not to open a can of worms (okay, maybe it is), because it seems the veterans are well aware of the controversy, but for any newbies taking a peek in here there's some simple helmet safety math I want you to look at:

Snell = Bad
Not Snell = much better

And from what we can tell it certainly looks like...

6D = Best

...for now.

I think there was a period when WERA required you to use a Snell-rated helmet but I'm pretty sure they weren't enforcing that and that the situation is different these days.

My understanding is that Snell 2005 was bad but 2010 is much more reasonable

^ No, only fractionally more reasonable. They dropped the max G limit from 300 to 275, which still left it higher than DOT's de facto 250 limit, and didn't remove the double hit. I actually had a long lunch with one of the guys who did the Motorcyclist test that caused all the fuss, and he said the 2010 helmets were still coming in far and away stiffer than anything else.

My understanding is that 2015 didn't make any substantive changes.

I like to use SHARP as my rating system. Would be weird if any TDP turned down the Pista GP R considering its ECE rating + its professional level usage.

The Pista is fine for AFM racing (which typically has much stricter rules and actually techs all the gear much more closely) and it is just fine for trackdays as well.

Pretty sure it's fine with any race organization (honestly haven't read the rules anywhere else in regards to that), I know I'd be a wee bit upset if I showed up with my Pista and was told I couldn't wear it.
