That is very good to know. I'm still looking for more numbers on trail riding hours. Last video I saw showed a guy getting about 3 hours on level 1 at Carnegie but apparently he wasn't completely charged. Not sure how low he was though.

I went back to Modesto Alta today and thought I would be able to get in a test ride on one of the street legal bikes before plopping down on the mxR. Turns out I misunderstood. They're so new that being able to demo is still a times away. Their "demo" bikes are there, the shop just isn't ready to demo.

Which leads me to a question. The shop said the smart charger actually costs $1800 but the price tag and YouTube videos from Moto journalist say $800. What's the real price?

Yesterday I rode Metcalf and met a guy, Steve, with a new ‘17 MX. He was quick, and I blew my charge demonstrating that I could be too.

I got in 33.4 miles and 2.4 hours before the display flashed a low battery warning, ie, blinkey mode.

I just rode the new MXR on the MX track at Metcalf. My goodness, that bad boy has some beans.

I just put on the third rear and second front tires; Metzler Six Days Extreme, as recomended by Eric. Also updated the software. Two things to change the range capability.

Yesterday we rode Hollister, usual loops. Peets, Jays, the Renz. Didn’t get to Troll.

Eric has a new Alta EX. He reached the blinky low battery warning at about 32 miles. He packed it up at that point. I kept riding.

I went back to Buckeye Thicket and took a the secret link to the Renz, then did Beehive and Tiger and San Andreas.
I went into blinky mode at 38 miles.

I did a loop on Beaverly’s and Shale until the charge was depleted. There was little power and zero charge remaining indicated. Shiftless still would go, however...

46.3 miles and 3.1 hours for the day. A new Shiftless record. I could then head back (downhill) to the truck and fire up the TM...

But it was pretty dry so I headed home... plugged in the charger, lube the chain, ready to ride tomorrow! Metcalf prolly.

Hollister yesterday, Eric, SpeedKills and me, three (3) Altas, an EX, MXR and an MX. We turned heads in our silence.

Range is always the question. Eric quit at about two hours for other responsibilities, and I think he was in blinky warning low battery mode.

SpeedKills and I went out again until he was at no indicated charge left. He weighs 95 pounds more than me. I still had an indicated quarter charge left. 34.6 miles, 2.4 hours.

Fun times.

I'm so glad I went for the second outing, that was when I felt it all coming back to me finally and started feeling comfortable on singletrack again. It had been too long, that was the most fun I have had this year. Can't wait to ride again!

Hey Butch,

How do you plan to handle battery replacement in the future? Is the Alta battery pack structured in some sort of cells in an array layout that would facilitate moderately easy DIY replacement? Or is it just one giant sealed cell with a very specific shape to fit into the bike?

The battery has five groups of Sony 18650VTC6 cells, 530 of them in total. They're about $5ea if you're not buying 100k at a time, so you're spending at least $2500 just from cells alone. The absolute cheapest I could build a replacement is about $3k, unless I were building in volume, which is also a volume that could never be supported by the number of bikes out there.

I think I have access to all the talent, materials and engineering that built these. The battery is a bunch of Sony cells, I think. There are a bunch of geeks reverse engineering the bikes. And making parts! I am along for the ride.

Fun times.
