What's the deal with CFARS? I submitted my AW registrations a while ago and haven't heard back. Checking the status still says "In Progress..."

How long does one have to wait? I want to go to the range!

You didn't want to convert and register as just rifles?

I got some home builds engraved and didn't know I still need to 'voluntarily' register by the 1s and pay $19 each. Have about 5 unmilled engraved lowers I'm debating if I want to register or not. If I don't now and mill them out after the first, I need a serial from the DOJ and the engraving I had done will be worthless.

What an absolute disaster. Makes the $$ spent on 80% stuff to avoid registration a waste IF you want to stay in the California and take your rifle to the range and use it.

California needs common sense gun control, machine guns don't belong on our streets

You know it's pretty bad when the ATF is classifying everything under the sun as machine guns. Did they modify them illegally? I wish there was more info in the press release but I am skeptical that they were really machine guns although you never know as you cannot see the internals to know for sure.

The way they have it worded I almost thought they were calling the Glock pistol a machine gun also I was really WTF'ing at that point.

The Los Angeles Field Division received intelligence from ATF’s Salt Lake City field office that a local man was making online purchases of Glock Auto Switches - devices used to convert semiautomatic Glock pistols to machine guns.
If you read it, the guy was buying auto sears for Glocks, that's how they got on to him. It would be no surprise if there were other modified rifles found as well.

the AK has an auto sear pin visible, so it's an MG

the Glock has an auto sear visible, so it's an MG

the AR I can't spot an auto sear hole, but it could have a LL or DIAS

Honestly, this looks like a good bust and this is part of what the ATF does is get people like this.

What's curious, is, again from the sounds of it, they managed to get a search warrant on a felon who was buying auto sears.

"auto sears" aren't "guns". I think they basically say, for example, in this case, if you have a Glock and Glock Auto Sear (or kit or whatever these things are), even not installed, that alone is "enough" to suggest an illegal machine gun.

But owning and selling the sear part, that's, obviously "uncontrolled". "You can buy them on the internet!" But here we have a felon buying auto sears and perhaps that was enough probable cause to have the authorities take a look to see what he was up to.

If they found him sitting around playing video games with a pile of sears sitting in an ashtray next to his couch, I doubt they would have any recourse. Nothing wrong here.

I'd have to think they had some other information to be able to get probable cause for a warrant than just the sear purchase.

A felon buying sears is suspicious, but maybe not suspicious enough. IANAL.

I wasn't saying it wasn't a good bust but more the terms they were using for the weapons or maybe it was just everyone uses the wrong terms and I just assumed they did also to make it sound worse.

So I know you can by legal Auto Sears under the NFA act but how was this guy buying auto sears online? I would have thought the ATF would be all over kind of thing.

berth, a Glock auto sear is legally a machine gun. the same is true of a LL or DIAS. Even if you don't own any other gun related items, it's an MG.

the fact that places break the law by selling them online doesn't change anything.

Oh, ok, I didn't realize the sear itself was controlled as such.

I think they closed that loophole many years ago.

I remember forever and long ago reading thru Shotgun News and seeing ads all over for Auto Sear "Paperweights" They were sold as "curio ecclectic" objects like bullet earrings, but these just happened to be actual auto sears. Apparently, at that time, that was enough to get by restrictions.

Actually, they used the "paperweight" description to sell all kinds of questionable things like brass-knuckles, brass knuckle knives, suppressor cans, etc...
