Would it be a bad idea to run this with no dirt riding experience?

Just downsized from a multistrada to a 690 enduro but have very little dirt experience and even then it was on fire trails on a 150 HP 600# upright sport bike...

Really interested in trying this out though!

I would give it a go. That was my situation in 2015. Had ridden on the dirt only a few times before... I picked up a plated xr650r and went with a few buddies with similar dirt experience or lack of!

It was a great time. Did some hard splits the first day, and thought I was going to die. That night I felt as though I had been run over by a truck and I am used to being roughed up, having bicycle raced for most of my life. But everything starting making sense the second day and I've been riding on the dirt ever since.

I think its a great way to jump into the sport, the amount of seat time you get at this event is unparalleled.

Do it! Couple (10..) quick random thoughts.

1) Find a small group that will give you a hand. Better not do it alone the first time...much of the riding is pretty remote....and large groups can really slow you down. Try for a group size of 3-4.

2) Take the easy splits on that big bike.

3) Full knobbies. Not "dual sport" tires. Be able to change a tube.

4) Keep the speed down, especially around blind corners. There will be folks flying by you, don't worry about it, stay to the right. You won't need to speed to get there before dark..if you don't take long breaks.

5) Ride off-road as much as you can until then.

6) Set your bar height for standing not sitting

7) Arrive the night prior to deal with checking in/figuring out the roll chart install.

8) Leave early (7amish)to allow for mishaps, navigation fails. If all goes well you will get there early, so what.

9) Layers of clothing, gets cold on the coast, and you may end up riding at night.

10) Dirt bike boots, impact protection..not street gear. Google images of the event..look what folks are wearing.

See you there!
