WTB: Cheap, reliable car for my student in need
I work as a continuation high school teacher in Oakland. We have a student here whose financial and home situation is really tough and I'd like to help them out.
He currently travels from Antioch part of the Bay 2-3 hours each way to our school everyday via public transportation. With a car, they could cut this time to 30-40 mins. Despite that difficulty, he has managed to show up to class everyday and get nearly all A's in his coursework. However, I can see how the commute is taking its toll on his health (he wakes up at 4am everyday to get to school by 8am). So with that said, I'm on the lookout for a cheap and reliable car for him to make his life good deal easier. He works hard enough to deserve it. Let me know if you have any leads. |

This car seems to fit the bill. I'd start there. I'd stick with a Toyota or Honda.

Are you sure a car will help him?
There is more to owning a car than freedom from public transportation. Maintenence, insurance, registration, gas, etc cost a lot of money... especially with questionable reliability of a cheap car. Good on you for trying to help though. |

My grades were better without a car than with. Just sayin'. More time to study on the bus, and less time wasted fucking around.

If the student can drive a stick, I’ve got my beater cage that I’ve been thinking of selling.
2004 Ford Focus w/225k, 2.3l 5spd. Clean title, oil changed every 5k since I bought it at 182k. I’m looking for around $1750 but it’s a student in need, maybe we can talk a little bit about price. |

I'm right there with Augustiron.
But if you still decide it's the way to go, I'd stay away from a Honda. It would meet all the needs for sure... But they're stolen so often it's now just a running joke in that community.

Great sentiment, but I agree that insurance etc will be more of a burden than not. Perhaps finding someone who already drives that way would help. Or, if it's the non-BART section of the commute, a scooter, bike, etc? I admire the effort, not putting you down in any way.
