Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day:

From the caption:
In the fading twilight, the reddish smoke drifting in the foreground at the right is from the initial ascent of the rocket. The expanding blue and orange filamentary plumes are from first and second stage separation and the first stage boostback burn, still in sunlight at extreme altitudes. But the bright spot below center is the second stage itself headed almost directly away from the camera, accelerating to orbital velocity and far downrange. Pulsed thrusters form the upside down V-shape at the top as they guide the reusable Falcon 9 first stage back to the landing site.

Launch scheduled for Sunday morning @ 10:31.
They're not being allowed to land back at launchsite due to another rocket standing nearby, so they're parking the barge just offshore, may be visible from Gaviota Beach.

Update on my son 're: SpaceX etc. He graduated in June with Aerospace Engineer degree. Turned down by Space X. He just got hired by Lockheed Martin in Colorado. He'll be working on the Orion Mars project. We're all very excited

I wonder why he picked SpaceX of Lockheed. I can imagine, but what was his reason?

Space X didn't hire him. He applied there a couple times. Lockheed pays better, has better working hours, better work- life balance. Elon once said to his employees, " If you aren't divorced, you're not working hard enough."
Aaron will be on a 12 man team responsible for the Thermodynamics of the Orion crew capsule. And when this program is done he will be working on the future Mars Space Station.
