#%*@ Superbike rule changes. Apparently, they now have three 40 minute WSBK sessions on Friday and SuperPole2 is selected from FP3 as opposed to the two one hour sessions last season. Saturday morning will see a 20 minute FP4 before SuperPole 1. I don't know if this is just for Phillip Island or the whole season.

Downside is in the last Friday session, Alex Lowes beat Gagne by just over a tenth to grab the last direct transfer to SuperPole2. Upside is we might get more live practice sessions on the video pass when they get back to Europe but I'm not holding my breath.

WSBK has also introduced something called "Independent Teams" similar to what MotoGP offers for the best satellite teams with a spot in Parc Ferme for the top Independent finisher. The word "championship" is curiously absent from "Independent Teams" in the announcement. The top Independent team at each race will receive an unspecified amount of prize money from Pirelli as well some kind of prize for the best Independent rider at the end of the season.

Nice to throw a bone to the privateers I guess.

Quote:
“We believe it’s fair to help and award the teams and riders taking part in the Championship as independents,” said Pirelli Moto Racing Director Giorgio Barbier. “They are not officially supported by the manufacturers but still in some cases they are able to fight for the Top 10 with the strongest riders giving their contribution to the show on track. For that reason, Pirelli decided to offer prize money to the best independent rider of each WorldSBK race, and a relevant money prize to the best independent rider of the final Championship standings”.

Really. These Dorna guys need to settle down. Their timing with some of the MotoGP changes happened to work. That doesn't mean they were all great either. I think the 15min qualifying is dopy, for example. 30 minutes is nothing for racers at these levels. Let them have the time and let us viewers have more time, too.

My guess with the independent team award is that it is more important to get press/tv coverage for the smaller teams than it is to get the extra Pirelli money. Sponsors are reluctant to spend money, if their logo is never seen by anyone other than the pit crew. I don't think it hurts anything, but just like in MotoGP, it's obviously a contrived prize.

the session timing changes were announced a long time ago. teams and riders like it because time in between sessions is more valuable for making changes and analyzing data than extra time during a session. the SBK schedule is now in line w/ the GP schedule.

the Independent Team definition is a bit screwy. this isnt GP where a factory is a factory. Honda and BMW are getting far less factory support, yet they aren't Independent. oh wells.

u can see who is and who isnt Independent on some of results pdfs. http://resources.worldsbk.com/files/...9c9944ecfc8451

From Brembo's Facebook page (animate gif on Twitter)

1.4g of braking downhill into a somewhat blind turn at triple digits with all that wind at Phillip Island pushing the bike around.

I like that the teams get more time on Friday, especially with the single bike rule. A crash in one session used to pretty much ruin your day but Alex Lowes was able to do his usual Friday crash and still come back to put in a decent time in a later session.

Cortese is doing a good job of showing why Moto2 > WSS. I think he has 3-4 days of testing on that R6 for a privateer team and hes 2nd after FP.

I hope the WSS 'ship is a 5 way battle btw Sofuoglu, Mahias, Krummenacher, Cluzel, and Cortese.

One of the regulars in the ADVrider.com racing threads is at the track. He said Sofuoglu had a big, fast crash in Turn 3 during this morning's practice. Awaiting word on his condition.

WSBK SuperPole1 starts in 30 minutes.

PJ's gotta learn [as does Jake, for that matter]

2 'muricans in top 16 ain't so bad for race 1,
especially since Camier's showing some Honda possibilities.....
