Right, lack of history (or lack of recent history) doesn't mean that it isn't on the road or isn't registered, but it's one of very few free ways for a normal person to figure out if it exists (with some false negatives but not really any false positives).

As much as it sucks I would move on. The amount of 20002s SJPD gets, no one is gonna spend a ton of time on this, and I haven't checked, but it likely will be closed out right away. Even if you get the correct plate you are going to basically need the suspect to admit he hit you. Considering the witness already has given the wrong plate it looks like a dead end to me. I wouldn't waste your time.

Call 408 277 4143 m-f 8am to 12pm to make sure your report has been processed and come in to our report counter to pick up a copy and hopefully your insurance can cover it.

Insurance coverage is probably the best route.

Good info here. My wife was involved in a hit and run with our 1yo daughter in vehicle. She was able to get the plates and said she will easily be able to ID the suspect.

I’m looking forward to the guy getting caught...

Had plenty of those. No charges filed. Rumor has it some bay area county DAs simply won't file hit and run charges.

when I got hit (on the bike) on the Bay Bridge, CHP decided to do a photo lineup (for a witness) using ancient DL photos so the witness picked the wrong person. it can be hard to prosecute.

when my lawyer did a photo lineup in depositions using a more recent photo, the witness picked the right person.

don't be surprised if they use an ancient photo, mine was taken at age 15 and is good until age 32 (at least, maybe longer)

So the car from this incident ended up being totaled...I replaced it and...THAT car was also hit & run!

Thankfully in this instance the place I was parked at (a work meeting) had cameras out the wazoo and CLEAR images of the offending car, the license plate AND the driver that was delivering food to the very location I was meeting people in!

They. Said. Nothing.

When I called the restaurant from which they'd ordered and shared the video they were both contrite and confused as to why their fully insured driver opted to commit a hit and run. Just dumb.

Car is fixed and life goes on.

An old dmv photo might have been all they had to work with.

Wow, what a story.
Such Assholes! In this world of no-responsibility taken, cameras are mandatory.

Could be, I don't know for sure, was just giving a warning that the pictures might not look much like the person

Garbage. I work in law enforcement, just not for the state. Chp report should be done early next week. Will give plates to my insurance and they can hopefully find it. Ill find a nexus to this guy and hopefully heíll be a client of mine.
