Even in those areas, still have to smog on transfer or moving into the area.

All I know is my pops' truck has had a Check Engine Light on for the past 2 years, preventing him from getting it smogged. He called his AAA agent who advised him to register it to the property that he owns in Amador County (doesn't even have a house there, just a vacant lot), and the truck would become smog exempt. He did that, and got his tags in the mail from DMV about a week later. YMMV.

Not for moving into the area. All my cars are registered to my in-laws address in a smog exempt county and we did not have to smog them to change the registration address.

Hey is this true, that its just a form @ dmv to change registration address, like they dont care if i move it to a smog exempt county - at like a coworkers address?

Some people told me you need to show proof of residence there like a bill or something.

The address change form is on the back of your annual registration renewal notice

I had some bad info then.

No. My landcruiser is registered at my sisters place. As long as it looks like a physical address you should be fine. I.e. no po boxes. That loophole is solidly shut

Dang. Where's the nearest smog free CA county where I can buy a small piece of dirt to stick a big ass mailbox and charge people rent to " live" there?!?!
Who wants to be my first tenant? I have 1,000 rooms available @ $150/ year

Easy one for you, Sierra County!

Also, I think they let you register to PO Boxes. I registered one to a PO Box, though they did give me shit for another and I folded, but it says, "or PO Box" right on the title.

list of counties that must smog
https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/vr/smogfaq

there are 58 counties in CA, there are 34 on that list... so something like 40% of the counties don't test.

you can have your registration sent to a mailing address that is a PO box but they will likely insist on a "where is it actually garaged" address to determine smog. how they prove it i dunno.

Not 100% sure, but I think you can do it, unless they've changed it in the last five years. Even my license has my PO Box on it.

When i bought a car in CA that was less than 6 years old (it was 2 years old), I didn't have to smog it - and my county requires it.

I believe as long as the car was either originally sold in CA or was previously registered in CA then you don't need to do the smog until the end of the 6 yr period.

Did you buy private party? Any title transfer in CA requires smog check.

It was private party, no smog was required. Maybe the DMV made a mistake, wouldn't be the first time for me.

Edit: I also just sold my golf private party and he didn't have to do smog either (it was a 2017).

Car has been sold. Lucky new owner doesn’t realize the gem he bought, I may have shed a tear.
