Motorcycle Polo used to be a thing ...

From a November, 1922, issue of Motorcycle and Bicycle Illustrated ...

I suspect that back when men-were-men what was considered a "dangerous"
activity was a bit different than today ...

Hey Vintage Cafe,

Motion Pro threw a party for its vendors and motorcycle industry customers
recently, and the San Francisco Motorcycle Club had three members in attendance ...

Kalle snapped a few pics of owner Christopher Carter's cool old motorcycle
collection and some of the other neat bikes on display ...

Mr. Carter founded Motion Pro in 1984 and is a Gold Medal winner in
the prestigious six-day ISDE race ...

What are the 3 round chrome thingies on the Indian tank? One is probably petrol.

Hey Marcoose,

Indian divided the right side gas tank and used the front for an oil tank ... You can sort of see the "L" in "OIL" in the pic ... so they have two gas caps and an oil cap on the gas tanks ... The theory was that the gas acted like a heat sink for the oil ...

That's what I hear anyway ...

see you around the campfire,

Marshall Store Run ...

Hey Vintage Cafe,

The San Francisco Motorcycle Club has an official riding season
from March through October, which includes two organized
rides per month ... This Saturday we rode up to the Marshall Store,
and then on for an overnight in Gualala ...

Purple Barry rode his 1970 Yamaha R5 ...

Barry is shaking the bike down for the Moto Melee later this season,
a three-day, 900 mile ride for vintage bikes made in 1970 and earlier ...
SFMC member Harley W. has been organizing this ride with Jeff G.
for many years now and the popular event is attended every year by about 100 bikes ...

This pic shows the second set of fancy carbs (Lectrons?) that he's
had to put on this bike, the first set having been stolen just before
the NorCalTT a couple of years ago while it was parked on the street
in San Francisco ...

Barry's R5 is a rider, having completed multiple Moto Melees
and NorCalTTs over the years ...

The SFMC conducts two riding competitions every season,
awarding members points based on attendance ...

A "Perfect Score" earns a trophy at the club's annual
Awards Banquet for any member who has attended all 16 official club rides.

The "High Points" competition recognizes the first,
second and third place member who has earned the
most attendance points at our weekly meetings as well as the club rides ...

The SFMC has been putting on the PerfectScore and High Points
contests for over a hundred years ...

see you around the campfire,

Great photos. Thanks for sharing more about the club - and other vintage bikes. I would love to visit the club for one of the Moto GP events. The little Dream and I probably wouldn't make it for one of the Thursday night meetings.

I plan on heading up for the start of the Melee. Hope to see you there!

Loving it.

My visit to the clubhouse was visual seduction as the old photos were addictive.

Well done here John!

Hi 65_dreamer,

I think I'm going to miss the start of the Moto Melee this year, but have gone to see them off in years gone by ... Really fun to see all the people and their bikes ...

Do you know where and when they are leaving this year? Think the old spot is gone now ... hope to see some of your pics!

See you at a MotoGP Sunday, soon!

Hi John -

I haven't heard the start of the Melee has changed. I was at a wedding there a few weeks ago and the spot was still the same. There was an event there at the same time last year which made things a bit more complicated.

I always take lots of pictures at vintage bike events, so no worries there.

I've been to the past few Melee starts, so I'm sure our paths have crossed at some point. But hope to meet you at the club soon.

Haha ... I'm vintage, so when I say "years gone by" I mean more than a few ...
Where have you gone to see them off?

Used to be at the Palace of Fine Arts, down by the Marina in an Exploratorium parking lot that's gone now with the Doyle Drive construction, or at least a slim shadow of its former self ...
