Hopefully the factory gave him a parts kit with it. Guys on the DT series were fabricating parts from the RS 15 years ago, because Honda stopped making parts for the bike after they pulled out of the sport. That bike is full of unobtainium.

".....You’d think it’d be easy to build a race bike faster and more reliable than the 40+ year-old, pushrod Harley-Davidson XR750.

But there are a lot of reasons why it’s hard to build a competitive Grand National Championship Twins-class motorcycle.
For starters, you can’t just rent a track and develop your bike at your own pace like you can (if you have a big enough budget)
if you’re building a road racer. You need 20 other guys racing on your dirt, if it’s going to groove up right

I was disappointed that MM didn't ride the Honda 750 at The Indy Mile

I wasn't surprised, he simply followed Rossi's lead with KR's '09 Indy nite -
plus MM was said to genuinely sad that The Bullet didn't win Fri nite

imagine Colin & Nicky & Noyes [& Koscinski!] schooling MM & Tito & Rossi......

Peoria TT this Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!

My favorite race on the schedule. #17 on the 17th? No question Henry Wiles has this place dialed. Is ten straight Peoria victories out of the question? A broken bike can't stop him. A last row start can't stop him.

Sunday schedule is here. (Ignore the track map ) Catch slides and jumps on via live streaming on FansChoice.TV.

Highlights from last year's Main.

Mega thread bump for the Virginia Mega Mile. 1.25 mile tomorrow (Saturday afternoon). This track is the longest on the AMA Pro Flat Track schedule. HP rules here so the Kawasakis are favored. Time to find out how tough the built Kawis and unrestricted XR750s are. Could be another rough weekend for the Triumph teams.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I root for the Kawis, so this makes me happy , but I also root for Shayna, so this makes me sad.

Without knowing the details of how the engines are built, I'm guessing the front line Kawasakis (e.g. Bryan Smith) are going to be at least as robust as the XR's. It seems like there's more headroom in that design as far as piston speed, etc. than would be the case for the XR.

The Irish roadracing guys say that they can get something approaching 100 HP before they become grenades. Granted, that's not necessarily a state of tune that would hook up real well.

Anyway, it seems like the Kawis are as going as fast or faster when it's time to shut off for the turns, and that the XR's have done well based on their acceleration at the beginning of the straight.

I can't believe I only just noticed this thread!

Catching up...
One of the biggest differences between Flat Track Motorcycle racing and Nascar is that the bikes don't have brakes. (Okay, they have rear brakes these days, but they're not really for slowing down)
In that way it's a better comparison to sprint cars.

On the grassroots level I've been doing this for a few years and in 2014 became the Race Director for the Nor-Cal Short Track Championship.
We run on 1/8 mile bull-ring tracks where big horsepower isn't necessarily the fastest way around the oval. The racing is intense and often physical but always fun.
It's been a great experience serving in this role, seeing the new riders gain skill and confidence and especially all of the kids who're taking part. They're fearless!!!

One of the greatest things about the sport though is that it is so accessible. For a minor investment you can scoop up a CRF150 or 230, an XR100 or TTR125 spoon on some smooth tires and go ride or race flat track. Ready for more power? 450s are cheap, as are any number of cool vintage racers like TT500s.

A set of tires lasts the better part of a season and other than changing the oil the bikes don't generally need too much attention. Heck race fees are between $25 and $40 per class depending on which organization you're riding with.
Where else can you race that cheap?!?

We're pretty fortunate in Northern California to have access to quite a few tracks, promoters and clubs.
In no particular order:

Lodi (1/4 mile) Lodi MC, Stockton MC, SFMC, D36
Prairie City Dirt Track (1/8 Mile) Nor-Cal Short Track
Ukiah Speedway (1/8 mile) Nor-Cal Short Track
Lakeport ((1/8 Mile) Nor-Cal Short Track
Salinas (1/8-1/4 mile) RMP Productions
Chowchilla (1/3 mile) California Flat Track Assoc.
Atwater (1/8 mile) California Flat Track Assoc.
Chris Beck Arena (1/8 mile) North Bay MC (Sadly cancelled this year)
Antioch (1/4 mile+) Gene Romero's WCFT
Sacramento (Mile) AMA Pro
Calistoga (1/2 Mile) AMA Pro

And more tracks are rumored to be coming back!

We're practicing tomorrow, Saturday August 23rd at the Prairie City Dirt Track on both the TT track and the Oval. Then on Sunday, August 24th is Round 7 of the Nor-Cal Short Track Championship. Come on out to ride Saturday, race Sunday, or just spectate!

Budman was kind enough to sticky our thread in the Racers Corner if you guys would like to keep up on our series.

Mega Mile track talk with Brad Baker and NorCal local Mikey Martin. 145mph before tossing the bike into the turns on a cushion track.
