thinking about it more, closer to $500 is ideal because it's not the end of the world if something goes awry when I'm out and about.
How about a Vostok Amphibia. Less than $100, reliable, and very unique. A coworker of mine rocks one, and he loves it.

nope for the Vostok. too dive-y. at $100 I'd opt for a Seiko 5 instead...yeah yeah no Seiko was one of the rules . Archimede and Hamilton look good so far.

Personal preference, I'd go for the Hamilton.

Recently bought my first somewhat pricey watch (~$4k) as a pre-retirement present, a TAG Heuer Carrera. Was really nervous about spending that much on a watch as I don't have any pricey clothes or fashion stuff, but I'm glad I did. Really, really like it. I have two older cheaper TAG Heuers that I've had for a long time and they've both been bulletproof, so I figured I'd stick with them.

My only complaint with Heuer is that the replacement bands are so expensive. I snapped the loop on my old Formula 1's plastic/rubber band and a new one was $250 for it. Nucking futs. Took me almost two years before I broke down and bought a replacement.

I bought my friend a $50 Invicta dive style watch for her birthday, the band broke, it was honestly easier and faster to buy her a new one (I lied and said they warrantied it) than to figure out where to buy a $10 metal band and have it switched.
