I watched it yesterday. I liked the idea of a monsterish thing that appears different to everybody, taking the form of their worst fear (or memory or whatever). I didn't care for the execution. It was very awkward with the whole antisocial mother thing.

I can't wait for Bird Box 2 where the students from the school for the blind become elite monster hunters.

The Happening at least made a half-ass quasi-scientific explanation of the monster / what was killing people.

I didn't say it was a good explanation, but it was a token more effort.

I did a little research and apparently the original version aka the book was a lot darker.

SPOILER:

Apparently the mother was debating on putting acid in the kids eyes so they wouldn't have the deal with the monster and could live in peace without the ability to see. The place they found at the end of the movie was other people that gouged out their eyes.

I was just flipping through channels in the office break room and The Happening is in Syfy channel. So I left it there.

Enough CNN...

I enjoyed the movie. I thought it was tense. I didn't love the premise of the threat, but I didn't think it was that much more absurd than most films, and what's the point of science fiction if not to take an unfamiliar or unlikely premise and explore it?

I always considered the most common point of science fiction, to be thinly disguised social criticism of our current society, and the direction it is anticipated to be heading.

I started to watch it and got bored. I will eventually pick it up again and finish it... someday... given that I watch tv a couple of times a month, that could take awhile
