Project KTM 690 SMC

This was by far one of my favorite supermotos. Very nice motor, very light, and super dependable. I made the mistake of selling my super clean one a few years back.

I wanted another, but noticed that they are now commanding quite a lot of money these days! Already having a similar bike that is the '14 Duke 690, I can't see myself spending 7K + on an SMC.

I found pretty beat up example (but mechanically perfect) out in Sacramento. I was able to bargain this SMC down to $4400. It needed a little bit of work, but since I haven't had a project for a while, I decided to take this on.

Here is what the bike looked like when I picked it up. I rode the bike for a bit and it was mechanically solid. No leaks, no stall issues. Nothing bent. Most issues I found were just dirt and sun faded. I did notice that it was a bit loud for a stock bike. More on that later. The issues I noticed when checking out the bike were:

-brakes don't work very well. Probably air in line, brake action was mushy.
-broken clutch/brake levers.
-missing heat shield.
-fogged up display
-rusty chain
-bald rear tire
-FI light on due to improperly done smog removal

When I took the bike home, I started tearing into the bike and cleaning it up. I noticed a few more problems.

-cracked header concealed with header wrap. That explains the loud noise!
-lot's of loose bolts.
-improperly routing of some lines

I fixed all those, and fixed/replaced the following so far:

-handlebar (thanks ilzonic!)
-both levers (thanks norcalathlete!)
-replaced brake pads
-changed all fluids
-fixed fogging speedometer
-installed handguards
-reset computer (FI light now gone)

I've got a huge shipment in parts coming in the next few days, so this thing should be back to near 100% condition by the end of the week. My goal was to keep the parts under $1000, and so far i've spent $700. That damn header pipe was $200 alone!

Anyways, having tons of fun getting my hands dirty again!

BTW, here is what my first one looked like. Have the same plastics ordered, but will go with different graphics. Tempted to order another Wings pipe, but I kinda want to keep this stealth.

I'll look around, but I don't think so. If you got a spare Jackson, grab one of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/76-pc-BODY-B...6c512c&vxp=mtr

I'll drop by here if I find other donation material.

I have something similar. Moose racing makes a KTM bolt kit - they look like the OEM KTM bolts. I'm on my second bolt kit. This is my 6th KTM, so i've had to replace plenty of bolts. haha

Thanks again!

Glad the levers fit. If you need a hand wrenching I'm not terribly busy these days.
