CHP Salinas has some sort of Open House thing coming up. Give them a shout for details, if I come across it again, I'll post it.

Just a slight OT question, when is one too old to consider changing careers to get into LE?

The Army would not take me when I was young, no matter college degree or not.

I had coffee with Daniel some years ago, and have ridden with him a few times; Hollister, the Junction, Sears Point...

He is a stand up guy. We need LEO’s like him.

Never. Depends on the agency age limits, but some don't have an age limit. CHP caps at 35.

I'm surprised no one has a successful age discrimination lawsuit with that one.

How long should one wait before applying to another department? I’ve been trying to get into a specific department and been waiting to be assigned a BI since the beginning of the year.

I thank you all for your thoughtful and sincere responses! I’m glad there is a community I can turn to when I have questions, every single one of your responses and recommendations is being well considered. I’ll be sure to update this thread with my scores from this months test and I will also look into the library’s LE practice test book! Again, thank you all!

And butch, redsticker season is around the corner and I’m ready for some riding!

-Daniel

What would the basis be? I thought age protections did not start until 40. I'm sure CHP can demonstrate why 40+ is not suitable for the job.

Ok, so if one is 40, they can't get hired with CHP for no other reason than age. How is that not age discrimination? Who says 40+ can do the job? That's nonsense.

And at 35, one can still work a good 20-25 year career.

Begs the argument then, that folks @40 need to quit and find something else?

I'm over 40. I'm a much more proficient officer than the young new hires that I help to train. I see it first hand. But that goes with training and experience. I don't see why a 35 or 45 year old new hire can't do the job just as well, or better, than one in their 20s. It should be on an individual basis.
