Why don't cops wear armor?

yes please!
My apologies if this is a repost, but I was hoping someone would have some insight. One would think that with all of the safety data and accidents that police respond to, they would consider wearing leathers. What gives?

Cause it restricts them too much if they have to fight with a suspect.

And they don't wear full faces cause its too impersonal and intimidating.

Or some crap like that...

The cop stash and stunna shades dont intimidate you? :nerd

There are many reasons, but as Trap put it... They are mostly crap.
A few departments are switching to riding suits with armor though.

They're heavy traditionalists with limited budgets. Their concerns and cultural norms get in the way for the most part, but if there were better options for them and larger budgets combined with a more open mindset, you might see more of it. Some local departments seem to have made a bit of an effort, but not too many here in the US, including the most common CHP. In Europe they are required to be sold only CE-approved clothing, so you see much more of it over there, just as you see the use of bikes a lot more too.

Yeah, there's no reason why moto patrol cops shouldn't wear more protective gear. Flip up helmets and some kind of 'stich suit would be a good start.

Probably a repost

It cost too much money with such a limited budget, but I heard some departments do spring for Aerostich suits.

because cops are squids:twofinger

You mean stuff like this???
Most Police administrators consider this protective gear excessive and intimidating. I suggest ALL motor officers submit a written proposal requesting a flip-up Dou-Tech police helmet and Aerostitch Police protective suit... use these pics. They will turn you down. Try again through your union (if you have one). Keep a copy of their refusals, so when you get hurt on duty (your fault or not) you can sue the shit out of your agency. You know they will turn you down, but it is insurance, of sorts.

I also welcome others to post images of police m/c riders in proper protective equipment. I feel the police should be setting the example and the days of short sleeves and 1/2 shell helmets need to go the way of sap gloves and brass knuckles.

strange, didn't know that some Berkeley cops wore armor. I don't recall seeing any of them in it.

Errrr and while we are talking about setting a good example - how about NOT skipping up the "slow" lane in a cruiser in rush hour at 75 MPH in a 55 with yer flashers off :p

Awww, flashers at 75... that just causes the crackheads to get paranoid and swerve alot! :teeth

MM4L stop posting that picture. Thats some nice propoganda shit they use there. You can't get those guys to wear a traditional motor suit, much less that expensive gear they own.

The only time I've seen them in those suits...in 7 years...was at a class, where they were talking about how bitchin they are. 364 days a year though...they are wearing standard patrol utilities...yes. Cotton pants, Cotton shirt, bullet proof vest, loose leather gloves, and combat boots.

It may be nice for them but they refuse to wear the stuff. And, one of the guys in that picture has been in at least 4 accidents in the last few years...yet he still wears no protective gear other than the fancy helmet.

So, pose the same question and we get the same answers over and over again.

Why don't we wear armor, because most agencies do not approve it on duty and most officers if they can, will still not wear it.
