Four killed in early-morning motorcycle crash

CERES -- Four people on two dirt bikes died early Sunday after their motorcycles collided in a rural area south of town, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Their identities have not been confirmed, but all four appeared to be in their 30s, said CHP officer Brandon Moore. One of the bikes was registered in Modesto, the other in Ceres.

Sometime between 1:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m., Moore said, the bikes were heading toward each other on a dirt road. The bikes collided, and all four people were thrown to the ground.

One man and one woman were on each bike, he said.

The accident happened northwest of Crows Landing and West Taylor roads.

A neighbor found the bodies about 8:20 this morning in an orchard area, Moore said. They were found on a dirt road that comes off a canal bank, said CHP spokesman Tom Killian.

There were no signs of drugs or alcohol, but the substances haven't been ruled out, he said.

Most "dirt" bikes don't have lights. Not even a brake light. That's the top reason why they are not legal on the street. Some nice dirt bikes do, but not the regular run of mill. Duals are a different story.

Just terrible. Were they all friends and out together? Why not ride toward the same direction - why come at each other full speed?

And all of them died. Insane. I always pack up and ride home when the sun has a finger left to the horizon.

Everything about that is weird.

Two per dirt bike?

Man and woman?

Riding towards each other?

In the middle of the night?

In the middle of nowhere?

:wtf

I just saw it on the news. It's sort of local for me.Report said no helmets and that at least a couple of them would have survived if they had them.Looks like drunk chicken in an orchard which isn't lit up at all.Pretty sad.

:rip Very sad!

Condolences to friends and families! :rose

R.I.P. Steve...

Out in the middle of nowhere if you get injured hypothermia is a serious risk. When I used to do alot of solo riding in AZ I always carried a kit with the thought of breaking my leg in the middle of nowhere and having to lay there for a couple of days before someone noticed I was missing. I also used to have someone call me around when I was supposed to be back.

The four dead have been identified as:

... Thomas Moore, 33, of Ceres; his wife, Kelly Moore, 30; his sister, Cynthia Moore, 29, of Ceres; and Michael Stokes, 33, of Ceres

:rip x4

The weird thing is the CHP spokesman for this tragic accident is CHP Officer Brendan Moore.

Probably seemed like a good idea when they decided to ride like that so late at night, perhaps with alcohol being a factor.

Obviously it wasn't.

This will probably make it into the Darwin Award lists. (Just an observation, not a judgment)

Godspeed, riders.

3 members of the same family, and the 4th was likely very dear to them, as well.

Let's remember to take a moment to think about our loved ones and our obligations before we next decide to do something over the top just for kicks...
