So I crashed a few weeks back, very slow at like 10mph in a bit of sand/gravel. It was a newbie mistake, I felt like I wasn't going to make a turn and I stood the bike up and ended up running off the road with the brakes on and washed out. Needless to say I went down hands first.

I was fine and so was the bike, with minor scratches. The problem is with my hands. I went down on my right hand first and the glove tore where the thumb meets the palm of the hand. It seems like a really weak point. I would hate to think of what would happen to these gloves if I was actually going at track speeds. I've crashed on my mountain bike before using cheap 15 dollar fox gloves and they still look brand new. I spent over 70 dollars on these if I remember correctly, they have fancy carbon knuckles blah blah but they won't even protect my hand at slow speeds?

Do you think that the leather was flawed or that they're designed to do this? I have a pretty bad rasberry on my hand and it was certainly not fun to ride home after. Should I contact Alpinestars?

Ah, the renowned A* quality. :|

Next time get some Helds. Expensive, yes, but how much are those fingers worth? ;)

Sp2s are cheap and shitty, the GP line in Astars is where you should start. Personall I think Rev it makes the nicest pair of gloves out there right now

My SP2's feel sturdy to me.

How old were yours? Ever get them wet? Show any signs of wear prior to the crash?

I also own a pair of A* SP2 gloves. I have almost a year with them and they are
already dry and cracking. I also went down with them at about 15mph in gravel. The gloves barely touched the ground and it shaved quite a bit of leather off.

Definitely not worth the $80 that I paid. I'll be replacing them with a different brand once the heat comes on. Right now I'm using a pair of winter gloves.

A* glove quality has declined over the years IMO, unless you get their top of the line gloves. Vanson used to make a really sturdy glove they sold for < $100 two years ago...I don't know if they still make it, but you might ask a local Vanson dealer (it was very underpriced, although they may have rectified that since they couldn't keep them in stock at $79). Marin Cycleworks may have them if you are north of the Gate, Scuderia West (ask for Amy - VERY knowledgable) if you are south...and I'm sure there are others.

my buddy had those as well and the stitching came undone after a few months of riding. i'd just steer away from their gloves altogether.

is it just their gloves that are bad quality? I was thinking of getting an A* 2 piece

gloves seem to be the problem. some of the stitching on mine are starting to come apart. i was thinking of getting the sp1 model.. but i'm looking to other brands now.

how are rs-tachi gloves?

If you bought the gloves at a Cycle Gear store, take them back to the same store. They'll be covered under the 100% Satisfaction Guarantee.

If not, contact Alpinestars directly: http://alpinestarsinc.com/contact

I'm on my second set of AGV gloves in the last five years. The first set developed extremely thin leather at the tips of a couple of fingers after 40k or so, and I figured I'd break out the back-up set. [edit]No crashes - just riding in hot, cold, rain and hail.[/edit]

I do like the Dainese Hellracer gloves, so those might be next.

I had a pair of SP2 gloves last two sesaon (6000 miles) and three crashes of racing and trackday riding. Never had a problem with them other than minor stiching on each crash. They never saw street rides or gravel though. They slid great across pavemtn at 80mph though with only minor tearing.

I know use racer gloves.

My SP2's "tore" in the exact same spot as the one in the image. They tore in a non-moto related fall (down some stairs). I think the "stitching" is just generic, and I dont think trust them for very much longer. I've had mine for about 5 months or so (probably longer) and will definitely be getting another brand.

i've had a pair of SP1s for about 2 years now. they've seen some heavy rain and have held up well so far. they haven't seen pavement or dirt so i can't contest to its crash-worthiness.

i'm definitely looking at a pair of racer gloves as well. extra protection and piece of mind is worth it.

I have the SP2's. The stitching on mine is ripping apart from taking the gloves on and off. Oh, I have had them for about three weeks now. :thumbup

Looks like my next gloves will be Helds...

I've heard a lot of good thing about Held gloves. I've met a lot of people who swear by Racer brand gloves as well.

RoadRider carries Racier. They are definitely worth a look if you are in the area.

Why you gotta hate??:laughing I had two consecutive pairs of A* GP that are awesome! The only reason I got rid of the last pair was they lasted SO long that they became stiff and stinky...like your penOrx:p

I had some top o' the line Teknic before that, loved those as well:thumbup They were about $120

They tore in a non-moto related fall (down some stairs).

Why can't I stop laughing at this??

:rofl
