Anthony West tests the screamer powered Kawasaki Ninja ZX-RR at Jerez.

Yes. It does sound like an F1 car.

It is the "screamer" engine (evenly spaced firing order). The current engine is the "big bang" engine (firing order is very closely grouped together folllowed by a long period of "rest").

Sort of like this:

Screamer = fire, pause, fire, pause, fire, pause, fire, pause, fire, pause, etc....

Big Bang = fire, fire, fire, fire, pause, pause, pause, pause, fire, fire, fire, fire, pause, pause....etc.

Guys do like screamers, I've heard.

Hopkins likes it, and says it is the next milestone in Motorcycle racing.

Yamaha boss says they will never see the screamer again, and will always use a "big bang" format because of the connection between bike and rider.

:wow That sounded fantastic.

btw, why don't Yamaha make a "big bang" for the street then if it is so much better connection from bike to rider? Bastids:|

I thought 'big bang' was firing two cylinders simultaneously, making it more like a twin?

Because saying "this is what you need (rider friendly), not what you want (big hp)" is not a great sales strategy for sport bikes.

Thats kind of how the Ducati 990cc big bang engine worked. Its also why the big bang engines sound terrible (to me) vs. the awesome sound of a screamer.

Click here for a good article on the big bang engines.

yes it does do that, meaning the amount of rest drastically offsets the power stroke.... something more like dbl fire, dbl fire, pause, pause, pause, pause. i dont think its completely necessary that 2 pistons fire at once, but its def easier to design that way.

the sceamer went out of style because riders found that tires worked better/lasted longer w/ the big-bang. now that tire tech has caught back up and we now have traction control, well prob c the screamer again.

Don't expect big bang on production bikes, it induces extra vibration that doesn't suit a street bike expected to last years and thousands of miles.
