2009 Cal24 Rally Announcement

The 2009 Cal24 Rally will be held in San Jose Ca. on June 12-14, 2009. Exact times and location will be included in the Rally Pack sent to participants.

Mark Crane has again agreed to serve as Rallymaster, and Tom Melchild is still President. We have a great route set up, with some interesting twists and turns that everyone will find entertaining, and challenging.

Alex Ciurczak has done a great job updating the Cal24 website. There are now forums and announcements for participants to share with each other on. Please check it out.

We also now accept PayPal for entry fees.

We look forward to seeing you in June!

Sweet! Since its so local this time, maybe my schedule will let me participate! Yay!

I was hoping that re-doing the website would earn me a 20-minute head start, but Tom didn't go for it. :laughing

I'm looking forward to this one just as I have all my prior events; it always turns out to be one of my favorite weekends of the year. It should be interesting starting & finishing so close to home as well!

*BUMP* for a great rally! Less than 3 months to go... :banana

So, going forward ('cause I'm goning to miss this year), is it a pretty safe bet that IF there's going to be a Cal24 rally, it'll be be roughly the second weekend in June?

Has been that way the past few years, but unlike death and taxes, this isn't nearly as guaranteed. (but probably likely)

Less than two months out! :ride

There's a whole bunch of tips out there on the iron butt site and elsewhere, but they generally fall into two main categories: Rider Prep and Bike Prep. Bike Prep isn't much more than making sure your bike is in great mechanical condition, is carrying the required and recommended equipment, has very good lighting, and is comfortable for you to ride 24 hours without wanting to shoot yourself.

Rider Prep depends on your long distance riding experience going in. If you regularly knock off 600+ mile days without any trouble, doing a 24-hr rally won't be significantly different. In my mind, chasing bonuses during the rally helps keep things much more interesting and the brain working well rather than droning along on a highway for many hours at a stretch. If you've never done more than 300 miles in a day, then I'd recommend starting to do that right now, and working your way up to some 500 and 600 mile days to see if you run into any gotchas in comfort, fatigue, or any other problem prior to the rally.

I set up areas on the Cal24 site to discuss both of these topics directly:

Less than a month to go! :thumbup Tom puts in the final shirt orders in the next few days, so if you're on the fence, now's the time to sign up to guarantee you'll get your swag in the right size...
