Eric and I did a bit of riding and camping this weekend up at Middle Creek in the Mendocino National Forest.

We loaded up the bikes (his KTM LC4 640e and my Husky SM610) and left from Lower Deer Valley, hopped onto upper Deer Valley Road, then hit some trails in search of a nice warm camping spot near water.

For those that know the area, we hit some connector trails and finally ended up on Trail 12 to 17 to 37. These photos were taken at the junction of 17 and 37...

The perspective in the above photo cracks me up:lol: It makes me look tiny and the Husky look huge!

I was a tad reluctant to ride my 610 on 37, since it was sporting the 5gal tank (full, I might add...) a totally shot rear tire, and was fully loaded for camping, but my fears were without merit. As long as it didn't get away from me on the downhill stuff (it picks up speed like a cement truck:p) it was a blast to ride! There is one section before the big creek crossing that is pretty tight through some...I don't know...it's not manzanita but similar...and I usually blow a turn or two there on the KTM but the Husky sliced and diced that stuff like it was nothing! It was nothing short of a revelation! Eric said I was going pretty good through there. The Husky is lower, has a much tighter turning radius and a shorter wheelbase. A total joy to ride:thumbsup:

There's some good downhill right before the creek crossing, visible behing Eric and the bikes...

And the semi-rocky road up the other side...

I'm almost embarrassed to post these, as the water is only about 1' deep at the most. Bike were disappearing beneath the waves and being swept away at the Sawmill Enduro here in `03. Eric saw a guy totally disappear beneath the water that day. He chose a different line. Luckily the race got called before I got here. Anyway, it was Eric's turn first...

Then mine...

The twisty climb out of the drainage was some of the most fun riding I've done in some time. I'm always amazed at how capable and nimble
the SM610 is.

We explored along a nice creek...

MC_June09028.jpg

And found a nice place to camp...

MC_June09030.jpg

Went looking for firewood and Eric got to use the handy-dandy folding saw I got him a few years ago...

MC_June09021.jpg

I went looking for flowers and butterflies while Eric labored :D

We got camp set up and then headed into the creek to soak up some sun and enjoy the day. We spent the entire day tromping up and down the creek, chasing frogs and looking for fish, talking and swimming, drinking red wine out of our bota bag (one of the Top 10 inventions for this campin' dualsporter ) and just having ourselves a ball in general. These are the days I live for!

Anyway, got the fire started...

MC_June09023.jpg

...and then got the stove ready for dinner, which would be spare ribs cooked over the fire (they were frozen when I slid them alongside my Camelbak bladder earlier in the morning, now they were just slushy) and mashed potatoes with bacon and cheddar.

Hey, where's the pan?

Whaddaya mean?

Well, you packed the food.

Yeah, well, you're the one that carries the pan and stove.

Not today, I'm not! What did you do with it?

Me?? Nothing! How come you didn't grab it?

You do the food, remember?

Yeah, well, you load your own bags, don't you??

Long story short, I remembered seeing a fresh can across the creek and went in to get it. We boiled the crap out of it and it became our faithful companion the rest of the weekend :) Dinner was delicious!

After sitting by the fire for hours on end we slept like rocks and woke with the sun the next morning. After a long walk and 2 strong cups of coffee we headed on over to Stonyford in search of more water to play in.

Hey, what's down this road?

MC_June09035.jpg

Ooh! A swimming hole!

MCJune09006.jpg

It was kinda cold in the shade so we kept on going. It'll be sweet in another month or so...

MCJune09007.jpg

Had lunch at this pleasant little spot...

MC_June09037.jpg

Spent the rest of the afternoon playing in the water here...

MC_June09039.jpg

We goofed around so long we had to high-tail it back on the road...

MC_June09040.jpg

Instead of taking the superhighway the whole way, though, we headed towards French Creek. We crossed the creek near Crabtree Hot Springs and headed up the hill toward home...

What a great way to celebrate the Summer Solstice! This is what I missed out on last summer after breaking my ankle, and I can't wait to do more of it this summer! We had a great time together, the bikes performed flawlessly, I never had to pick up the Husky (bonus!) and the weather was exactly as we had hoped!

Thanks for coming along with me

Glad to hear you were able to conquer a certain water crossing...... Towing the SM610 back might have been a bit more difficult:twofinger

That friggin' tank is huge - and you are a petite little flower:teeth

:rofl Funny you should mention that, Brian! We were talking about that ride after we came down the hill and crossed the tiny trickle of a creek. As I was making my way down the hill through all the ruts and stuff by the homestead I was thinking to myself how absurd it would have been to try and tow Scott up that hill (or vice versa, as the case may have been) and I had a pretty good chuckle going by the time I got to the bottom. I did tow a Husky 450 out of there with my KTM last May, though. It wasn't a lof of fun but it was a hell of a lot less eventful than my first attempt:laughing

And yeah, the tank is a monstrosity, for sure. I didn't really need it on this trip, but it's been on there since I got back from the NV/OR trip and I just haven't gotten around to doing anything about it:)

Super cool way to spend a weekend.

You shoulda posted this in moto photos to remind people that motorcycles do more than hang out in parking lots :laughing

Yeah, I thought of that...I dunno...it just doesn't seem like the kind of thing that most BARFer's are interested in, ya know?

And yeah, it was a whole lot of fun!

Awesome, as always! I have only one question - how do you cook ribs in a beer can? ;)

OK, two questions - what is "CAFEHSQ?"

:laughing

We cooked the ribs on the grill over the fire, then used the grill to hold the can on the stove:)

HSQ is the "official" abbreviation for Husqvarna, and cafehusky.com is the home of all things Husky. It was started almost a year ago by the mod of the Husky forum on TT.

Very cool. :thumbup It just lit the fire for me to get off my butt, round up some buddies and go up to the mountains again. :ride

i love middle creek. was there a few weeks ago and rode trail 37... I absolutely love that trail. The water was about the same depth then. Did u get a chance to ride #38? that's one of my favs as well.

great pics... looks like lots of fun. thanks for posting

Thanks for sharing, I too love it up there. I've been trying to talk my buddies into doing something like this but I think they are reluctant because they wouldn't be able to carry enough beer to get them through the night :laughing

Nope, no trail 38 this time. And yeah, I think 37 is one of my favorites out there, too :party

Tsk Tsk...beginners :rolleyes You don't carry beer on trips like these, you each carry a flask of scotch or something similarly hard :laughing

I have a bota bag that I got in Idaho last year that holds 2 full bottles of wine. I wouldn't have ever believed it if I hadn't dumped the 2 bottles of 7 Deadly Zins in it myself, but it has worked flawlessly and has never leaked, even after crashing with it in the bags :thumbup I'm sure you could put some other kind of alcohol in it if you have the kind with a latex liner and not one of the traditional ones with pitch-covered goat hair on the inside.

Get out there and do it...soon!

It's still spring time at elevation and the flowers and butterflies are everywhere! My favorite time of year :ride

predictably awesome photo essay...
i wanna party with you girl!

Hey, I never said my friends were necessarily that smart... :rofl

Well...I mean...they are your friends, so...:laughing

Seriously, though, a flask and/or bota bag are all you need :thumbup
Mush better than cans and bottles.
