HID Projector Retrofit *Updated*

Hello everyone :)

I’ve been doing more research on projector retrofits to install HID lights into housings that are designed for halogen bulbs.

I am still deciding which parts to use and the small details, but below is the tentative parts list. Nothing has been finalized/ordered but I would like your input. I also have a few questions. :nerd

Questions:
1. Has anyone done a retrofit and could offer advice/suggestions.
2. Do you think the "extras" section is stupid, which parts specifically? I'm not sure if I want the added attention (theft) but I know they are relatively inexpensive to add and fun to look at (toys). However, this money could be spent on increasing the visibility of the rear which is an upcoming project.
3. Does anyone know of local resources if I need help with the install?

05' Suzuki SV650s (Stock headlight below)
Budget: $250-300 (Including everything)

Projectors: Infiniti FX-R Bi-Xenon $160

HID Kit: DDM Tuning, 55w, D2S, 5k temp. $85

Extras:
Tons of options, all are for appearance and could be money I spend on safety gear (ex: reflective tape, rear visibility, etc.). However, they can be done easily and look cool. :teeth
- Shrouds/Bezels
- Angel Eyes :angel
- "Audi" type LED strip
- Demon Eyes :devil

I've done a ghetto retrofit and I think the best place to get information is probably a sv650 forum or hidplanet.com. But I see that you've already posted on hidplanet. lol

Yea, Im a part of both forums. Noobs get no help over at HIDplanet hu? lol

I've done a retrofit and they're hard as hell to aim, you will go through a couple before you get it right.

As far as extras go, forget the angel eyes and LEDs, they look stupid if you ask me. Yes on the shrouds though.. you don't want your projector mounting showing.

DO NOT use the bulbs the 55w kits come with, they will burn the reflective bowl in your projectors and you will get hot spots and it will look like shit after a while. Use only OEM brand bulbs (philips, osram)

I do not know of any local people that do retrofits commerically.. wish there were somebody local though.

If you have a retrofit I think it's worth the money. I have an S2K retro on my car and I could never go back to halogens or ricer HID kits. I've been through E46, TSX, FX and S2K projectors and S2K by far are the best I've seen. FX projectors are the best bang for your buck though, just don't use the stock lens or you will have a shitty cut off and shitty color. FX bowl + TSX lens = win

I can get the 35w kit but the other bulbs are expensive and I need to keep the project in budget. There is no way I can afford phillips or other bulbs + ballast vs. the DDM kit for under $100.

I gotta work with my budget. You seem to know your stuff. Can you suggest other ideas to keep my project in budget but still better than OEM?

Thanks for the help :)

You need to stay away from non-oem bulbs, they will damage your expensive projectors. Trust me on this one, just spend the extra money or wait and save some extra money. Usually on HID planet you can get some oem ballast/bulbs for under 100, you just have to look hard enough.

Your budget of $300 should be fine but you will have to do all the labor yourself, you wont' be able to find anybody to do it for you within that price range.

I may have all the parts you need right under your budget if you're interested, give me a PM if you are.

If you get this figured out I would love to see a write up!

I looked into just putting HID's in and I got to the point of buying a really nice Philips kit for about $500 but the site did not have them in stock after about a month of waiting so I just canceled the order.

I was planning on doing it myself but was curious if there were any local resources if I ran into a problem.

PM sent.

Gotcha :)

Well I recognize most of those pictures..

So I take it you've been over to the R6 forum and seen misterjj's guide?
http://www.r6-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=84178

Pictures thread for more projector loving.
http://www.r6-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86154

And if you wanted to have them just done for you Neema, misterjj is looking for volunteers to work on so he can write guides for other bikes.
I was going to have him do my bike, but I contacted him after I purchased my HIDs, and didn't want to deal with buying a second HID kit, so just stuck with what I had.
http://www.r6-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=102773

Finally, I'd strongly suggest against getting 55w ballasts. I currently have 55w ballasts, and it worries me since my bike gets somewhere from 13.2-13.5v when it used to get 14v on the dot (oem spec for my bike).
Turn off the lights, and I still get 14v on the dot, so its obvious that the extra drain is from the HIDs.

Left is stock 08 250R. Center is 08 250R with 6000k 35w. Right is my R6 with 8000k 55w.

Plus, my harness burnt in less than 2 months. I'm waiting for a replacement from them right now :mad

@ 8000k you might as well be using those blue bulbs you find at autozone.. 8000k kills visibilty. For the best visibilty get 4000/4300k.

Here goes a thread explaining it:
http://www.cobaltss.net/forums/showthread.php?t=94774

"And a comparison of Kelvin to lumens;
Standard OEM halogen 55W 9006(HB4) = 1100lm (lumens)

4300k D2S Philips = 3200lm (lumens)
4300k D2R Philips = 2800lm (lumens)
4300k D2S Philips = 2400lm (lumens) actually 5800k
4300k D2R Philips = 2000lm (lumens) actually 5800k
4800k D4S/R (brand) = 3800 (lumens) -- brightest in the market
5800k D4S/R (brand) = 3300 (lumens)
7000k D2S other = 1790lm (lumens) *(other bulb brand)
7000k D2R other = 1390lm (lumens) *(other bulb brand)
8000k D2S other = 1180lm (lumens) *(other bulb brand)
8000k D2R other = 780lm (lumens) *(other bulb brand)

Higher than 8000k, the light output significantly drops off, causing the light to be almost useless."

Yea, I plan on getting somewhere near 4k (3.8-5) depending on where I buy my kit. Anything over and I am loosing light.

Solomon, I sent him a PM. It would be an awesome opportunity, lets see what he says... :) Thanks for the info.

Hey if you are looking for something to use for retrofitting, I have a pair of e46 projectors, ballasts and bulbs. I bought them a while ago to retrofit into my car but the projectors are too big to fit in the housing without cutting into the radiator support. PM me if you want them. For a price that is hahah

If he's willing to do it for you, and you are short packaging supplies, let me know, I have an excess of packaging peanuts I've saved up over the past few years from ordering too many things from Newegg :laughing

ive done it on my cbr 929. i got the oem HID from a cadi sts, the process is really simple and they are not really hard to aim if u now what u r doing. however, i ran into a problem, the HID started flickering all the time so i had to run it directly from the battery with an on-off switch. u will need to fabricate a some brackets for mounting and aiming purposes and u will have to trim ur headlight in order to be able to housing the projector. pm me if u need more info.

Teaser pics :cool

I ended up going with a setup from another BARF'er. Thanks Vany!

Infiniti FX35 Bi-Xexon Bowls
Honda S2000 Lenses
Phillips D2S Bulbs
BMW OEM 35w Ballast
BME E46 OEM Shroud (I decided not to use, I prefer the blackout eye-ball look)

It still has a few items that need to be added. Pics will come once its done.

- Black blacking to give the areas around the headlights a cleaner and more OEM look.
- Blue ccfl halo's.
- I purchased Amber 194 T10 LED bulbs for the running lights to repalce the silly blue ones the previous owner used. I was surprised to find a set for $3 online with 6 LED's. I was considering turning them into turn signals. Suggestions? FYI, they are the two empty pods on the top left/right of the headlight.
- A switch to power-off the projectors so I can 1) start-up without major drain on the the battery, and 2) display the halo's solo.
