Is Ace Cafe Really closing?

So Im such a fan of the place and hang out there pretty much every week, that I am dazzled by this...

I subscribed to the FB page and got this this morning....

The Ace Cafe San Francisco
RIP Ace. Peter from Kink has raised our rent to $20,000 a month. Efectually making our lease void. So our last day is Wednesday the 27th. Thanks for all your support. We will miss you all!

the owner of kink.com probably owns the building. IIRC kink.com is actually based just across the street in the old army building.

Yes, he owns the building Ace Cafe is in, and it's right kitty corner to Kink. City ordinance does not allow him to have a bar there, so he wants the Ace. I think he has been wanting to make that move since Ace opened, and now that their lease is up he can. Too bad - I like that bar.

Well, I hope the owners of the ACE take their liq license and move elsewhere. Commercial rents have come down and moving the liq license is possible - though tough in this city. Its a tactic I've seen by a more than a few bldg owners in their attempts to get control of the liq lic at their properties. Hopefully we see another ACE at a new location. Best of luck to them.

So where is everyone going to watch MotoGP now?

You might post that on the FB thing. Or I can do it for you. I would rather see Rob keep his license even if its somewhere else and give a big finger to Peter.

That's a douchey thing to do. And it totally ruins my plans to meet up with some folks for the Portugal race.

Go for it. I'm pretty familiar with the bar business in the city. I dont buy that city ordinances dont allow a bar in that location and the that the owner is doing the city a favor and shutting down the ACE. ABC wouldnt have issued a lic for the location in the first place if it wasnt legal to so (I know from first hand experience). Now, they do have a 41 lic which legally is supposed to generate at least 50% of their business from food..... but that is rarely enforced unless there have been problems at the bar.

Edit - just for the record. I have no inside info on what is happening. Just my opinion.
