So, I'm taking the week to wonder about the Western states before making to Hawthorne, NV on Fri, Sept 7th.

Starting on Fri, Aug 31st from St Anthony, ID. I plan to spend the first week of Sept, going up to Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, maybe to Colorado and down to Utah.

Mostly camping and hotel if needed. I'm still at the planning stage now. All I know is a few destination I want and the final destination.

I'll be taking my Tiger and planning to buy a new tent, seat bag and sleeping bag. Gotta find a good app or website to find camping grounds along the way.

:ride

Any suggestions for roads/places in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado or Utah?
This should be fun! :party

If you have time, out of Moab take 191 south just past Blanding then hop on 95 West to Hanksville. From Hanksville take 24 through Capitol Reef NP until you reach Torrey. In Torrey, take 12 west. Awesome road and Amazing scenary of the canyon lands. Make a stop at Bryce Canyon if you can. Then take 14 out to Cedar City.

If you had more time I would recommend you get on the Colorado 550 south out of Montrose. The Colorado Alps and the Million Dollar Highway are amazing.

Try to dedicate at least one day to explore Yellowstone. It won't nearly be enough but since you have time constraints one day will do. You will want to go back for sure.

Have a great trip and take lots of pics. See you in Hawthorne.

Veeferreefer is totally right. That hogsback when you come out of Escalante, Utah, with the eroded sandstone abruptly dropping away on both sides...yum. If you're going through Capitol Reef via Utah 24, might as well take the scenic drive down Capitol Wash, mostly paved and a couple of miles of good dirt down by the end. There's pie at the little historic house by the Fruita campground. Easy free camping down many of the dirt roads in Utah, as long as they're not in National Park lands, just make sure you have water for the night.

In Nevada, I think Hwy 50 is prettier and somewhat cooler than the Tonopah-Caliente route. There used to be gas at Rachel, but not anymore, I think. Better have a 220+ mile tank radius for that route, too; I once coasted into Caliente on fumes on the old VFR. Also, if you take 50 you can camp free at Spencer hot springs, or up in the mountains in Great Basin National Park.

550 south of Montrose (million $ hwy) is great. Also Lizard Head Pass through Telluride (Hwy 145) is a smaller road, also a great ride. Hwy 92 on the north side of the Gunnison River is way cool, and I'd go through Dinosaur Nat'l Monument if I were in NW Colorado. I have a Colorado riding-specific map if you want to borrow it.

Up in Idaho, Lolo Pass (Hwy 12) rocks, lots of riverside easy campin' too. Hwy 93 through Salmon is the only place I've ever seen an entire herd of bighorns come down to drink at the river at sunset.

Also, if you're going through Jellystone, expect a slow day--RVs and others will slow you down, just relax and enjoy the wildlife spotting. Anyway, don't see it on your route, but consider adding Beartooth Pass (Hwy 212) from northern Yellowstone into Red Lodge, MT. Beartooth goes over 10k feet and has epic views; Robert Pirsig wrote about riding it in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

Fuck yeah. :thumbup

Thanks for the input guys. Beartooth and Going-to-the-Sun are two definite highways.

I found these website for finding camping, gonna try to camp as much as possible:

nps.gov (National Park Service)
reserveamerica.com
koa.com
www.forestcamping.com

And I found this tent, it's on it way:
Catoma Lone Rider Moto Tent
http://www.practicalsports.com/lone-rider-motorcycle-tent.html

And this Motofizz bag:

So I tried out the tent this weekend. It's f%kn great!
It was real easy to setup and breakdown.
It fits more like a 1 1/2 person tent, having room for all my gear and tail box.
I (short person) was able to sit up comfortable inside.

The motofizz bag worked great too.

BTW, I stayed at Manresa State Park. (attached)

Hey WTF my dog is loose (0:40) out there. :laughing

On Friday I start my trip with a ride up to Reno, NV the to eventually Ashton, ID by Sunday. Looks clear and 81F this weekend up there.

Did an oil change last weekend. Will order tires to be sent to my Mom's house.
The bike is ready.

I have my gear set and a vague notion of where I want to go. That's good enough.
I'll pack Thursday night and take a pict or what I'm bring. It won't be much.
Has to fit in my tail box, dry sac or tail bag. That's it.

So I decided to change my tires here in SF.
Not sure how they would make a 900 mile trip to ID.
Well it's one less thing to worry about on my 4,000 mile trip! :thumbup

I got some barkbusters to put on the bike and the bike should be good.

I also got a survival knife, in case of bears?

Here's the map of the roughly planned route. :ride

I was going to provide some input on the MotoFizz, but it looks like you already bought one. Two words: ziploc bags. As in, pack everything you put inside the Motofizz in ziploc bags. Trust me on this.

Awesome! Looks like a great route. If you have time, I'd swing south on Utah Hwy 24 through Capitol Reef Nat'l Park, rather than taking I-70.

Have a fine time out there. :banana

Google picks the route, I don't question. :x

...:laughing Ya, I will. I'll try find some dirty roads too, time/weather permitting.

See you in Hawthorne! :party
