I just bought a Yaesu FT-60R... and went to a certification class yesterday..

Anyone have their ham radio license? I'm taking my test this weekend.. wish me luck..

Anyone want to be my elmer so i can bombard you with 1000s nerdy questions?

My roof has a lot of surface area; I'm excited at the possibility of spending $1000's of $$ on my new hobby.. :laughing

My first antenna is going to be a vertical 2m/70cm dipole..

:wave

Feel free to shoot me a PM with any questions you have.

There are a fair number of hams on BARF based on previous threads.

my dads super into Ham radio chad. you 2 probably are similar in age too.

PM me questions, I'm not super active any more, but I can probably help. I've got some ARRL books you can have for DIY stuff if you feel like it.

Good luck on the test, it's pretty easy if you crammed well. I just got my call sign a couple of weeks ago. So I'm a complete newb also, but feel free to fire any questions through.
Picked up a vx-8r for the moto/truck and an ft-857d for home. The rubber duck antenna's are crap! I put a diamond dual band on the roof, and get good signal to local repeaters even with just the HT. Next on the to do is a 6m antenna, which is going to be more difficult, will probably go random wire with a tuner in the attic.

Hey I've got a FT-60 too.

PM me questions

Or post 'em here, maybe I'll learn something also!

Maybe we should set up a BARF chat on a local repeater sometime. :teeth

I also have an FT-60

Set up a meet, I want to figure mine out too :p

I'm down for that... I haven't used mine in a while, but it still worked the last time I had it out. :D

I can probably find the programming software and cable for the FT-60R in one of my piles of ham radio related stuff :nerd... it's a Windows based program, and the cable uses a serial port of all things, not even USB. :laughing

If I have the radio on, it's usually on the N6NFI repeater... there's a few motorcycle riders that frequent that repeater too.

Awesome! Maybe we can all get together and program your radios en masse. Assuming I find the damned thing, of course. I do need to change my saved frequencies as well... :nerd :teeth

I just remembered, I signed up for BARF back in 2009 using my call sign and never posted or used that account... I'd completely forgotten about it until now... :rofl

The Mount Diablo Amateur Radio Club seems pretty active. They do a morning commute net at 05:45 and 06:15 on 147.060 pl-100hz. I'm not sure if you can raise that repeater from Oakland though... There's a repeater or two on Grizzly Peak as well, but it's been a long time since I tried to get into any of those.

Dammit Chad, if I didn't know better I'd swear you were following me around. :laughing

Also just picked up an FT-60 last week, getting it programmed up for our local repeaters, lurking a couple of nets, and reminding myself how much RF theory I've forgotten based on a couple chapters in one of the books.

Radio picks up several repeaters surprisingly well from the bottom of the canyon out here, with a Diamond 77 antenna threaded onto it as of today. I'd like to get something outside bolted onto one of our 200' tall redwoods...:D doing my research on 2m/440 antennas today.

Subscribed for some kind of mass concentration of nerds.

Just what I need, another expensive hobby. :facepalm

HAM party at O'Nick's Unabomber cabin :banana

I could probably put something on in my garage though :p

(I need to snuggle up to the manual and program this thing)

I can get 147.060 from Fairfield. Not sure how well I come through though. Wanna test? :teeth

Post up your signs, KK6AHP clear.

KJ6BPI. :thumbup

I need to figure out how to work this handheld before buying more stuff :laughing
