SOLD
I need to sell my BMW. I (still) have to have another knee surgery soon, and it's likely that I won't be able to ride for about a year or so. Note this is not a desperation sale - I have the space to store it and I will, if I don't get a fair price. EDIT - looks like my surgery is next week, so this is your last chance.
RTPs get a bad rep because they are typically "ridden hard and put away wet" and show up at auctions and shady car dealers in a range of prices. Read on, my friend.
The bike is a 2007 and recently turned 21k miles. Yes, verified miles. Unlike many other ex-police bikes, this one has a complete documented history, and was never wrecked or abused (yes, I checked).
My bike came from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, where their police motors program was frozen due to lack of funds and bikes were put into storage sometime in 2010.
I bought the bike with 17k miles at a state auction last year after doing extensive research. After purchase, I had it inspected at A&S in Roseville, and then did lots of basic/preventative maintenance (all documented), and have been riding it sparingly since.
It's never been down while riding on my watch (I dropped it while parked once but the safety bars do wonders to protect the bike).
The bike is clean and straight and the only flaws are some deep scratches in the paint on the front fairing where the state morons must have used a screwdriver to remove the cop decals and badges. I installed new roundels, but didn't get a chance to repaint the upper fairing.
For upgrades/mods, I added a Wolo Bad Boy horn with relay (it's a Stebel or a very close clone) and I also added a Hyperlights rear brake module/flasher.
I bought this bike because I had a theory - if I was going to commute by bike to work, I wanted the safest possible bike, and that everyone surely notices a cop bike. Well, not everyone does. But many people do, and despite its size, the RT is perfectly suited to lane splitting and commuting, as well as long trips.
No immediate maintenance is due and the bike recently had its fuel pump replaced under recall at Diablo BMW. BMW just also extended the warranty on the fuel strip which is a common issue on the R1200RT, but this bike has not had any problems with that.
It has never had a transmission or final drive problem or replacement (there was a suggestion of a leaking rear seal but it has never reappeared and was likely an old leak or spill from something else).
There are two side city cases, and a top case that normally holds the police radio box, but can be used as a regular topcase. All lock with the same key.
The bike has ABS, linked brakes (when you pull the front brake lever, it engages the rear brakes as well) and also has heated grips and heated seat. The windshield is electrically adjustable - sounds stupid but I use this a lot (lower screen for lanesplitting, raise it for open road and adjust as needed).
Original police wiring including the dual batteries is intact, I simply removed the second battery as it wasn't needed and would just add weight. The "brain" for the lights is gone, as was the light pod on the rear, spotlights, and the other police accessories.
Have it inspected anywhere you like (at your expense), see it around Walnut Creek, SF or Palo Alto when I'm commuting and while I still can (see knee comments above). Fly in and ride it home, both OAK and SFO are very accessible.
I have a 7 minute video walkaround: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gql3KsfhrRE
I know there are some cheaper RT and RTPs out there, but this is a good one, and my asking price is lower than others I've seen with 3-4x the miles and none of the history. No test rides without cash in hand.
I'm a long time BMW guy, member of IBMWR and BMWMOA and BARF of course.
If the bike doesn't sell this month it's going to sit until next Spring, and if it does I am going to have the fairing painted and will have to do a complete service again, and the price will go up accordingly. I'd rather not have it in the garage reminding me that I can't ride.
