So... bought a Steamer (1997 Triumph Tiger) here on BARF ...about a year ago I think...( time has altered for me with my new job so I may be off some)

anyway, I bought it as a weekend bike, try to get the old lady to 2 up ( fail- she's simply too scared) and as a back up to my commuter a 2013 Zero DS.

SOme months back i used some rear brake and hear this horrific graunching sound...

yikes! When I stopped i noticed the rotor is all scraped and the outer pad is down to metal while the inner still has plenny o meat.

SO I order a rotor and pads on line.

Get my buddy ( who does body work, brakes on cars etc and has wrenched on his own Harley and some Jap bikes back in the day) to come over and figure I can learn from him...

get the wheel off and rotor off and find the pads and rotor do not fit.

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuug!

So its up on the stand/lift and I go to Marin Speed shop, they order a rotor. No fit.

So they order all oem parts and it takes forever. Then I have the parts and my buddy takes forever. Finally yesterday he tries. Amid all the fussin and cussin... its not happening. ( I have the manual, which i bought from Marin Speed shop... weirdly not as helpful as you'd like.)

Anyhoots... Any Triumph guys out there who could come by and sort it for a fare wage?
Or anyone interested in buying as is at a drastic discount?
Bought it for 2700. Put new metzler tourance and a better windscreen.

Any and all help, commentary and suggestions welcomed.

I tried the search function cos I remember there are some BARFers who wrench for pay.But something was funky with that function cos as soon as i hit search i got this message that tells me i have to wait 15 seconds to search again... logged out and back in 3x, same thing.

I plan to sell anyway, cos I prefer thumpers and this seems very bulky and heavy and the old lady will not 2 up anyway....

:(

I assume you are going aftermarket because you don't want to pay +200$ for the disk?

the triumph P/N is: T2023205

http://triumphparts.calmoto.com/p/Triumph__/Disc-brake-Silver-not-available/43482411/T2023205.html

The '90s vintage, "carbed" triumphs share a lot of parts. Surprised you couldn't find a disk on Ebay. Are you avoiding Chinese parts?

Tried ebay, fail. Tried aftermarket THRU Marin Speed Shop, fail.
bought the expensive OEM stuff.

We couldnt get the axle and brake mount and pads all sorted correctly, though he trundled over to the shop with axle and spacers and whatnot in hand to get some advice and they said he had the order correct and all but... didnt work...:(:wtf

I am not a triumph specialist but Maybe if we knew more about the specific problem:

What new piece is wrong? ie: not the same as what you took off?

- rotor too think? offset wrong? diameter wrong?
- pads too thick? do they fit in the caliper? do they have a rotor sized gap between them when installed?
- are the caliper's pistons fully retracted? is the caliper able to float on it's mount? (if it is designed to do so)
- are any wheel spacers on the proper sides of the wheel?

there is a chance what is on there already is not stock (wheel, hub, brackets, rotor, etc) so mixing OEM and ???? may not work.

eventually, the oem stuff was right... the rotor is on, he was able to get the one pad in, but he got onto the the spacers and axle putting back on and thats where it went sideways... he DID verify that the spacers were correct when he headed over to Marin Speed Shop.... but when trying to get the axle on, the piece that holds the caliper ( sorta triangular) was abutting the rotor.

so..as is, the caliper does not have BOTH pads in, though they look right, the rotor is right, the wheel is "on" but it aint right/centered.

Muchly appreciate the input.

Again. Will pay a fair wage for wrenching and am looking to sell.

May I suggest you put all the old parts back on and look at the differences. Try the old rotor with the new pads.

Any pics of the old vs new parts you can share?

old parts went to MArin Speed Shope so THEY could compare once I went and bought OEM

Rebuild your caliper.

Rebuild your caliper.

this was actually previously done by the PO @ Nichols ..I think thats correct.
I have the paperwork for that too, layinig about somewhere

SOme months back i used some rear brake and hear this horrific graunching sound...

yikes! When I stopped i noticed the rotor is all scraped and the outer pad is down to metal while the inner still has plenny o meat.

I had the same thing happen to me on my 98 Tiger several years ago. I put new pads on the rear and left the rotor alone. The pads conformed to the shape of the rotor pretty quickly and over time evened out the groves on the rotor so that now you almost can't tell it ever happened.

Sorry, I know that doesn't help you and it's been several years since I worked on the brakes so I have no advice.

bump for mobile mechanic.. el skip? moto tire guy?

Don't call it a "steamer"... come on now. Its a good bike!

I stumbled across that nickname... not my doing.

Also, it's performed well, just not my type of bike.
I like the thumpers more.

And, am willing to part w/ as is for $1500
New tires, new windscreen, new rear brake parts....

bought for 2500 about a year ago, and that can be confirmed.
New tires installed by moto tire guy, can be confirmed.

I picked up this bike today. Looking like it should be an easy fix (spacers and caliper bracket are installed wrong for sure) and will hopefully have it going before too long. The battery was dry so I'll be purchasing a new one tomorrow if I remember to order it. The bike is clean and definitely looks like it was well taken care of.

I'll update when we get it figured out.

Parts were installed incorrectly and everything looks good now. I should have a battery here tomorrow and will hopefully test ride it tomorrow night to see if the caliper is fucked up at all. The brake pads and rotor he had also fit fine. Worst case it needs a new caliper or a rebuild on it. Neither are a big deal.

edit: Before pics.
