What would you do? (Parking)

I live in an apartment complex in Dublin with a 4 story parking garage and very poor security.

Multiple bikes have been stolen / tampered with / vandalized.

I recently purchased a bike and did not know about this parking situation.

I have been currently parking my bike in front of the car, covering it up and chaining & disk locking it. The problem is, my unit is pretty far from the garage and I would never hear the alarm from the disk break or know if anybody messed with it until I come out.

I have a view to the main road where you can park. I am thinking it might be a better idea to park it on the street with the disk brake 120db alarm, that way I would at least hear when it is being messed with. I can setup a security camera right outside my window and point it directly at the bike, to catch any kind of criminal activity.

With the bike being parked outside my window (I am not on first floor) I would also be able to take a picture of the people, which might scare them off because of the flash?

I am wondering what you guys would do in this situation?

1) Park in the garage
2) Park outside the window but on the street.

Any ideas would be very great.

Can't really say since your parking options suck. Highly recommend beefing up that comprehensive insurance. When you do get bit, hopefully it isn't too bad.

I have a $50 deductible for comprehensive. I don't think I could go lower.

I'd just do what you're doing and make sure you insurance covers you.

Nothing will stop a determined enough thief. Locks/chains can be cut, bikes can be lifted into trucks/vans and alarms can be disabled.

Honestly, I would just go heavy on the locks and have a low comprehensive deductible... Beefy cryo treated chain through the frame and rear wheel (and your car wheel if possible), disc lock on the front/back and locking bike cover.

After that just stop worrying, if it gets stolen just pay the deductible and be done with it. No matter what, if a thief really wants it they will get your bike. Just make it a hard target and live your life.

Have you talked to the landlord? They probably won't do anything, but it costs nothing and it's possible they would have a useful suggestion or be prompted into doing something about security.

I think I would choose one of the two options below:

1. Move
2. Get a crappy bike

Good insurance is the best bet. If a good thief wants it its there's. With a alarm or no alarm.
Have you thought of an alarm that has a pager.
some thing like this

heavy chain and park where there is alot of foot traffic

This interview has been floating around and this is the best link I could find.

TLDR - Lock your steering lock. Have a very visible passive device (NYC fughetaboutit chain/lock from Kryptonite). Make it harder for the thief and they might go on to the next bike. Never park in a gated apartment lot - great place for thieves to go "shopping." Rent a garage nearby. Oh and remove your clutch lever in a pinch.

My favorite part though: "The majority of thieves aren't that smart and half of those are on drugs, please don't be dumber than they are."

I recently had a bike stolen. My mistake: a month after fixing the ignition from a failed attempt (steering lock was on) I slipped 1 night and left my moto on the street rather than go through the hassle of juggling all the cars in the driveway to get into the garage and I was already late for dinner and the kids were hungry... thief figured it out the 2nd time. And no locks or covers either.

parking it outside makes it too easily accessible for someone to cut the chain and lift and take it away. I lived in Santa Monica in a complex where harley electraglides got stolen, even when chained. the dumb thieves are the ones that get caught. smart things... fuggin aye.

your other option of inside the garage sounds better. i would find a solid thing to wrap the chain around, like a steel railing off of the parking garage wall or something. lock it with a heavy chain (tho chians can easily be sawed off), have a xena lock on it, and cover the bike up. blocking it with your car adds an extra measure of deterant.

Gorilla alarm loud as fuck and easy to install
This is what I use on my bikes I'm On the 3rd floor and i can it clear
You can get the pager for it for a few more dollars..
And I have a disk lock and full insurance just in case..

So let's say your alarm goes off and you are there. What can you really do? If you go out to confront the guys trying to steal your stuff - you might get yourself into more trouble!

Call the police? If they can come, I bet they'd be happy to catch thieves in the act.

Last this happened in my area, took about 2 hours for the police to show up!

Maybe if it is an in progress theft they would be quicker.

Call the cops no point getting shot or stabbed over a bike
The gorilla alarm has 5 settings you have to play with them
The 5th setting if the wind blows the bike the alarm will go off
I have mine on 4 I have a key fob not the pager when I hear the alarm go off I hit the fob to stop it if it goes off again I know someone is fucking with it..

I think most people freak when they hear the alarm..I like in an apt block as well outside parking..
And they have good customer service at gorilla.

I had a sportster that shaked that much it killed the alarm
I rang gorilla and told them what was up..sent me a new one few days later

I'm a small guy, but a baseball bat the the back of the head of any unsuspecting person, regardless of how big or strong will likely cause pain if not knock them out completely.

Not that I'm advocating for anything, but self defense is always legal. Spin it!

This is why I have full insurance..I don't want to be rolling about the ground with some one can set the dog on them..if you hit some one with a bat Your're going to get your ass arrested..unless they pull a weapon on you.. But try the alarm first and full insurance makes me sleep better

last year (I think, not clear on the exact time frame and too lazy to look) a guy in Concord (GiC) had his bike stolen from the apartment garage. Had multiple video shots of the thief and as I recall thief was arrested shortly after bike was stolen. Not sure about details but bike wasn't recovered and thief walked. Months later thief was arrested again on unrelated charge and bike was found. By then insurance had paid out and GiC had a new bike.

I think good insurance is your best bet.

Dickhead is in custody arrested on unrelated charges. He isn't cooperating. If DA decides that there isn't enough for conviction, he'll be released. I'm trying to get his mugshot.

Just got a call from the detective. Suspect name is Juan Perez and he's a known car thief. Unfortunately looks like he's walking as evidence are circumstantial and he's not talking. He's been arrested many times, but property crimes are low priority and he's out.
Also there are rumors about bike theft ring that routs bikes to Oakland where they are loaded into containers and onto a ships. Fuck

January 8, 2015 - bike recovered
Comcord. Block from my house. Juan Perez is in jail. Got nabbed in Napa running from the cops.

Yes, I got a new bike. Perez was arrested in a stolen car with my license plate in the back seat. It's also confirmed by the detective that it's him on video.
