Thanks to the fish taco eating and tequila swilling little baby Jesus, Barf Baja 2016 is about to commence! :party :ride :thumbup

This thread may get pretty unorganized, hope to use it as a depository for updates when available and recounting the trip itself. I am sure upon our return there will be a number individual ride report threads (merlin :thumbup)

There is a spotwalla acct to track us. Dmitry, stepping up from his role as stand in rider, chase truck driver, russian beer swiller, and part time mechanic last year will be riding fulltime on this trip and has set it up for us.

You can follow us here on Spotwalla. The password is Bajahaha

There has been a flurry of activity for the riders these past weeks getting the bikes, trailers, trucks, and bodies ready for this years trip. We have had some last minute drama ranging from electrical issues, scrounging or fedexing parts, to last minute wheel rebuilds. But its on like Donkey Kong. The group has really come together to help overcome these last minute issues with the offer of parts, expertise, and good natured ridicule. :twofinger

With only a couple of exceptions, the group is leaving Friday for the Border. If all goes as planned, we should be at our staging point in Bola by nightfall Saturday.

ThumperX will be our trip's angel this year as she could not make it due to a last minute conflict. We have a great group of returning riders and 5 newbies. Pretty wide range of abilities and Mexico experience. Honda's and KTM's equally represented and two oddballs with a Suzuki and Kawasaki (there are always those that just have to be different :p.) No chase truck or Bossdog.

It will be about 800-1000 miles of riding, the majority offroad that includes a mix of familiar routes from last year and a number of new options. One of those new options will be the No Wimps Trail three of us will attempt. Should make the calle de muerte ride last year look easy. From what I have gleaned from the internet, few (if any) mortals have successfully completed it on bikes since the last hurricane. This trip is guaranteed to produce stories.

I am hoping all the participants can add a bio and picture here as well. Might be useful in tracking us in case we get lost south of the border.

So I'll start

Yep I sure did its in my signature. Now I get to start a new one, I have quite a backlog on ride reports. =/

I'm actually excited to see how it'll go this year. After BARF Baja 2015 I went on a bunch of other adventure rides and I've been refining my setup and gear the whole time. Time to see if the Cactus Puncher can take on the Baja once again! I figure adventure riding is 50% bike and setup and 50% rider. Equipment I've changed since last year is:
- Rotopax Toolbox (stronger, more organized, resists flopping around, Proven to take abuse after the Tahoe ride)
- Inflatable sleeping pad vs. airbed (saves a lot of space)
- Cogent Rebuilt Re-valved shock (I honestly can't tell the difference)
- Lowered forks and reduced spring preload in the front (supposedly this was why my bike was so unstable in the sand last year time to see and I lowered the preload because the ride is really harsh, if it still harsh I'm thinking of going to progressives)
- I still have BBQ Rack 2.0 still going strong
- Shinko 805 rear tire (The T63 did great last year but... it wears out pretty damn fast, so I'm trying this new tire. I heard it's great we shall see, it looks like a sand paddle tire with big block knobs.)
- Ditched the lowered footpeg brackets and cut and welded them lower (come rocks come at me!)
- And yes I'm trying to pack lighter but it doesn't seem to happen....

The bikes are looking good, I really like the style of the Beta Scott. I am looking forward to hearing how it performs.

Everytime I see your bike Daniel it makes me want to go pick one up and prep it for a Baja trip one of these years. I actually have a general outline of specific parts I would buy if I purchased a 650R. I love the XR platform, both air and water cooled.

Agree.... nice to lose 50lbs and gain 15hp. But not sure I could live without estart and do I really NEED more hp only to go faster in the desert? Adult answer I tell myself is no.
