Rider Skills and Safety Day
September 25, 2005 -- 9am to 5pm
Cost: Free
Where: The Town of La Honda (5 miles West of the Alice's Restaurant 4
corners intersection)
All are welcome!
On any given sunny Sunday the corner of Hwy 35 Skyline and Hwy 84 La Honda
(Alice's Restaurant area) hundreds of motorcyclists congregate for good
company and riding! Over the years, many friends are made and many have come to
appreciate how wonderful that area is! The Alice's Restaurant area is famous
the world over as evidenced by the number of motorcyclists traveling from
other countries and visiting the area. This uniqueness comes from the
combination of the area with it's wonderful scenery and roads and our motorcycling
community.
But there has been a downside. There have been crashes and injuries. Concern
from all sectors point to rider safety and it's the incredible 100%
volunteer efforts of the La Honda Volunteer Fire Department who comes to the rescue
for downed riders. Members fo the motorcycling community are stepping up to
the plate along with the various government agencies to improve safety in the
area and to raise needed funds help with the needs of the La Honda Volunteer
Fire Department.
This is quite an opportunity for motorcyclists to give back to the community
and support motorcycle safety.
Now for the fifth year its happening again. This event is geared to riding
skills and to your survival as a motorcyclist!
Dr. Harry Wong, chiropractor in Redwood City who hosts the very popular "Doc
Wong Free Riding Clinics" and his dedicated band of volunteers along with
the gracious support from the fire departments (La Honda Volunteer, Skywood
Fire, Woodside Fire), California Highway Patrol, San Mateo County Sheriff's
Department, Cal Trans, concerned community citizens and leaders, and many others
have helped make this event so incredibly successful.
The date September 25, 2005 -- Sunday from 9am to 5pm. This event promises
to be an event filled with fun, food, music, raffles, bike contests, shows,
demonstrations, workshops, and seminars. There will be various seminars on
topics such as Riding Gear, Rider Skills, Suspension Setups, Survival Tips on
the Mountainous Roads, First Aid and the role of the La Honda Volunteer Fire
Department. There will also be a bike show for custom bikes of all makes and
sizes.
Also watch for the Trials Demonstration too!
A huge raffle, our primary source of raising funds for the fire department
will be held this day too. Helimot European has sponsored us last year with a
full, custom set of leathers worth up to $2,000 as our grand raffle prize,
this year, they'll provide other awesome raffle items.
There will even be a "Meet the Man" session where we can get to know the the
local Sherriff and them to get to know us! Also we'll be able to talk to
many of the volunteers for the La Honda Fire Department. This get to know each
other time can foster much more cooperation and help for all involved!
The spark that ignited this was due to the ongoing desire of two people from
very different walks of life to improve motorcycle safety, Dr. Harry Wong,
chiropractor who practices in Redwood City and Larry Whitley the captain of
the La Honda Volunteer Fire Department. Doc Wong has been holding free riding
clinics in the area for the last 11 years and has been very active in the
motorcycling community. Larry Whitley as a volunteer fireman has been the first
responder at the scene of many motorcycle accidents over the years. Many
riders are totally unaware of the ongoing efforts of these well trained
volunteers who are there when we need them.
Larry has commented that he's amazed that the feedback has been so positive
in support for this event from residents and other agencies.
So the goal of the event is to have a great time and foster understanding
between all involved and to gain knowledge that would enhance our enjoyment of
motorcycling by improving our skills and gaining knowledge that would help us
survive out on the roads!
