SV Project pics - as requested

Hi all,
A number of you have asked for more pics of my SV project. Well here ya go. It started out as a 2001 SVS but then got the following mods:
2003 GSX-R 1000 front end
RC 30 swing arm
Dymags (stock Ducati rear, GSX-R front)
MV subframe, tail, exhaust
M4 header adapted to MV mufflers
Matisse rear sets

Then I started with my own composite making and built the gas tank. It's a copy of an MV tank but the top shape was modified to fit the SV. I took a mold of the underside of the stock SV tank and grafted it to the MV upper. Once that was shaped to my liking, I made a mold of it then reproduced it in carbon fiber and kevlar.

Now I'm on to making this new 1/2 fairing. These are pics of the pieces being shaped for final fitment. Once that's done, I make molds and reproduce in carbon/kevlar.

Once the bodywork is done, it's all apart for powdercoating and paint. I'm also looking at installing an '03 fuel injected motor. We'll see - that's going to require me to get creative with an out-board fuel pump set up. Not sure but I'm going to give it a try.

More info as it all comes together. If anyone's interested in more, feel free to give me a call/email.

here's the 'race upper' that I can swap in for track days. It's a quick swap for the street upper.
And yes, I do track days on it.

sweet lord. can you make me a cf/kevlar tank for my 916?

I get requests all the time to make people parts - until cost comes up. Tanks are very labor intensive and then there's the liability issue...I have sold two copies of this SV/MV tank -as 'artwork'.
But you'd spend lots less buying one from an existing supplier.

Awesome work!

I've got to admit, I'm not a fan of the look of those headlights, but they look very functional.

Check out SVRider.com The engine swap is on there somewhere and is fairly straightforward. Everything from the new gen just plops into the old frame :thumbup

What's the ballpark figure for a one-off CF gas tank?

If you could convince me to take on the project and I could find the time, I'd want at least $1000. Plus, I'd keep the mold.
I'd also need a tank that I could use as the basis for the mold - ideally, one that could be sacrificed as needed.

In the end, I much prefer making stuff for friends - as gifts. I'm not interested in going into business since that turns the hobby into work.

Here's a pic of the top section of my tank fresh out of the mold...

why get a FI engine?

I bought a fuel injected motor for another project I have going (SV 650 motor stuffed into a Honda RVF 400 chassis - wait 'til you see this one...! :cool ) and the throttle bodies interfere with the RVF frame rails. So I was thinking of swapping the FI motor into my SV and running my carb motor in the RVF project.

My SV is the never ending project bike so I figured, 'why not?'

nice single sided swing arm on that thing...........I guess the only question would be......WHY?

You can run flat slides on the 03+ SV motor. Then use the old fuel pump.

Talk to Zoran (TWF). He did it.

so,my friend,if I give you tank for mold you will make me one :)

c'mon we need a shot of the right side with that single swingarm... dang :)

Answers to questions:
-Why the single sided swing arm?
Because I think they're cool looking. This project has always been about design/style (say what you will about my personal tastes) not performance. - and I'm loving the way it's turning out. The bike works well, too. Not going to win any races on it, but that's mostly my lack of speed.

-If Zoran (apparently, he's my new best friend!) gives me a donor tank for the mold, will I make him a composite version?
Sure, if he's willing to wait a bit until I have the time. With my riding season over, this is a good time of year. Give me a call.

-What do I make the molds out of?
Fiberglass of various weight/weave with West Systems epoxy.
If you're interested in this sort of thing, give a call. I'm happy to share my learnings. In the end, it's much simpler than most people think. My SV tank was my first project - kind of a big first step but it turned out pretty well. It's mostly just very labor intensive.

out of curiousity did it increase wheelbase? looks great htough :)

Good stuff Chris, glad to see you are still busy doing what you love! Really enjoyed your NSR projects from back in the day....still wish I could have bought your Repsol you did!
