Resurrecting a '96 Yamaha FZR600 (Bimota YB9SR) that's been sitting for 7 years - where to start

Besides the obvious, oil change, new battery, new plugs, checking the fuel system, new fuel filter, replacing fuel lines, etc.
What about the carbs? They are 4xKeihin CKVD36.
Do I have to pull them completely apart or is there anything I can do in-situ?
Dump a bottle of Techron in and hope?
 
It's usually not necessary to separate the carbs from there linkages. If you remove the carbs, you can remove the float bowels and remove the jets, clean the jets and passages, remove the carb tops and slides and clean them. If you are worried about reassembly, leave one carb intact as a guide and clean it last. Done this way, it's not that difficult.
 
Take a good look at the carb boots while you have the carbs off. I have had them cracked/weathered on older bikes in the past.
 
Any in situ miracle cleaner that actually worked was outlawed for environmental reasons over 20 years ago.

If the bike was properly mothballed you might not have to tear the carbs apart but... You know it wasn't.

I like to get proof that everything is kinda working before jumping in and I am a bit lazy, which means pulling the air box and connecting jumper cables to a known good battery. Turn the key, it electronics come up, spray some starter fluid in the carbs, stand to the side (not with your body over the carbs in case they backfire) and see if it'll start.

If it does at least cough and run a little you can be fairly sure the ignition system is working, and the valves are reasonably in good shape. Now go do all that other stuff, clean out the carbs (check the float valves real real close) check the valve clearances
Oil change
Burnout
New tires
Check brake pads

You already know all this though

Here she is. Been sitting at least 7 years. Date code on tires are 2001. Brake fluid has jelly in it. Radiator overflow is empty.
4200 kilometers on the bike.
No frigging idea how to get the mirrors off to remove the side fairings.

Some dumb questions:
The vacuum (?) line between 1-2 and 3-4 that meets in the middle to a "T": Where does that go?

There are 3 (visible) plugged lines. I assume there's 4th hidden somewhere: Those are for syncing?

The bike came with an airbox from the factory but that's missing and there are 4 Uni pod filters.

Have you pulled the float bowls off of the carbs? Take them off gingerly so you can see what's settled.

I haven't taken the carbs apart at all. Since you have to remove them to remove the float bowls, I'm going to pray/ostrich until I get a new fuel pump, figure out how to remove the fairings, add/flush coolant, change the oil and then try to fire it up.

I recently picked up a 2007 gsxr 750. Used a hand siphon pump, drained old gas and put fresh gas in. Slapped in a lithium ion battery, checked oil and it started up.

Old gas smelled like paint thinner.

There's on vacuum line that goes to the fuel petcock. Can't figure out the one with the "T".
Maybe the fourth line for syncing is the one that goes to the petcock?

I was messing with the rear Paioli shock (nice one with remote reservoir). Bounce bounce. Oooh, a puddle of shock oil on the ground. Hopefully SuperPlush can work on it.

pod filters are probably a bad thing, but capping off the lines suggests that someone might have known what they were doing when they installed the pods. those carbs remind me of the ones on a '97 gsxr i had that had the SMOG systems removed. various things needed to be plugged so the carbs would get the right vacuum signals. if lines aren't plugged they become huge vacuum leaks. i wouldn't worry about them much at the moment. finding a vacuum line diagram for the appropriate FZR would help you figure out what goes where

This one has no smog and thankfully none of that stuff. :cool:

I acutally managed to find a complete airbox in Australia. On its way (eventually).
 
Little update:
Went through the carbs and they were in generally great shape. New o-rings, new pilot jets, float valves and seats, etc.
Got her back together and, after messing with float level a bit:


Still need to sync.
