UnitedHealthcare CEO shot and killed in New York City

Police are still searching for the shooter, a police department spokesperson said.

UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot Wednesday morning outside of a Hilton hotel in New York City, according to multiple reports.
Thompson, the 50-year-old leader of the health care giant’s insurance unit, was taken to Mount Sinai West in critical condition after a masked shooter shot him in the chest just after 6:45 a.m. at the New York Hilton Midtown, according to reports. He was later pronounced dead.
Police are still searching for the shooter, a police department spokesperson said. Police believe Thompson was targeted in the attack, according to several reports.

UnitedHealthcare was set to host an investor day in New York on Wednesday. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
UnitedHealthcare is part of the larger UnitedHealth Group, which is led by CEO Andrew Witty, who canceled the investor day amid the news of the shooting.
Thompson joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004, according to his LinkedIn, holding multiple executive roles before becoming CEO of UnitedHealthcare, one of the nation’s largest insurers, in April 2021. Thompson lived in Minnesota, where the company is headquartered.
“This is horrifying news and a terrible loss for the business and health care community in Minnesota,” said Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz in a post on X.

I think a lot of average Americans would have a lot to say to a room full of healthcare executives. I doubt much of it would be kind. I don't think Mr. Walz's sentiments will be echoed by many.

Well they don't get good reviews, that's for sure. Though, I wonder if any healthcare companies do.

If it was the father, mother, brother, sister, husband or wife of somebody who died because of shitty rejection of coverage by his company, then I really can't find any fucks to give.

Yeah funny to say that but it is still cold.

And yeah i was a customer. Cant recall any big cancellation problems but im pretty sure they’ve collected more from a healthy male, than they have paid to doctors.

Also, thping on an apple product is atrocious, i dunno how yo7 do it.

So it begins. I was hoping some positive change would occur before murder. But here we are. With the Trump assassination attempt(s) and this getting plenty of attention, I don't think we'll have to wait long for more occurrences.

I'm surprised I didn't imagine this would occur at the intersection of "healthcare is pathetic" and "eat the rich". It's the perfect combination of FU to push someone far enough.

I don't see them as related. I think this person was providing consequences for very dirty actions is how I read it. I'm actually surprised it's taken this long for something like this to happen.

I’m not a fan or hater, just see sadness here. Dude was headed into a yearly penny counting meeting of his huge company in a controversial industry at a posh NYC hotel, just wondering how one could be oblivious to the need for protective service? They’ll likely not catch the killer unless someone knows them.

lol wtf

...:flag

If he was shot BEFORE getting to the hospital, then that bullet wound was a pre-existing condition. Unfortunately they can't offer coverage at this time. Try physical therapy.

so basically, if any of you care about the real news, NPR by now is reporting, that "the gun jammed at first" and then the assailant continued shooting. Soooo... ...

:wow :wtf

Says he cleared the jam and kept shooting. Sounds pro, or I guess they could be totally dead inside from some terrible situation.
