Time To Get Fit - 2024

I don't understand why my HR runs 10 points higher at all times when at a public gym. Makes no sense from my own gym...maybe the change in where things are located? Always confuses me...

still working out, still trying to lose that good old 10 lbs I've had since COVID, still eating healthy or trying my best to!

HR is very variable. Is it warmer in the gym? Simply having people around can influence your HR. 10 BPM isn’t much but it is noticeable.

Could be people I suppose...LED's are in my own gym, but this has been the case for awhile. Maybe it's the unfamiliarity of the place which leads to more walking, etc...weird tho.

Different cuff? Wrap lower or higher at gym/home? Sitting differently? Arm position?

So many factors. A story,

I wear contacts. Left eye felt bad, by the time I got the contact out, pain like an ice pick thru my iris. Didn't subside, drove myself to a local out-patient clinic. Waited and finally got to see a nurse. She could see my scarlet eye color and had the sympathy look as she read my blood pressure.

"Oh my!", she says and proceeds to ask me who my primary physician might be. I tell her I recently went on Medicare `cause I'm retired, don't have one having been on Kaiser for years. (Kaiser doesn't extend their coverage to my little 'burg.)

She wanted to ship me out as my blood pressure was through the roof. Was I on meds? Was I taking drugs? Do I have a history of...No, no, no are the answers.

They didn't want to send in someone with the little mirror slit until I said,

"I'm in pain, but I am an ex-athlete. At 9.5 out of 10, I function. At ten, I will start demanding some drops to ease this pain. I will be loud. So, since I feel like an ice pick is in my eye, these flickering florescent lights overhead usually affect me and you're cute, I think high blood pressure is expected, don't you think?"

Since I was calm, smiling and rational, they proceeded to investigate my evil eye. Nothing visible. Later negative follow-up with an ophthalmologist, led me to realize I have had migraines all my life. Kid has them. She knows her triggers. Since everyone always told me they felt like hurling and often did, I thought my head just was an ache. Except...I rarely throw up. Was a problem when I related symptoms before and after my appendix removal--at 52 years old. They kept telling me pre-and-post, "If something is wrong, we'll know because you will vomit." No, I didn't and it delayed treatment...twice.

Now I avoid reading detailed info on the laptop with a bright screen for 48 hours straight. Easy Rx.

70+ years on the planet and I am still figuring out this body. One of these days, I'll figure out what tree/plant causes an allergic reaction at what I'd term pre-spring. Still procrastinating on that one.

It's that time of year again! lol Anyone else see their strava year in sport today? I'll show you mine if you show me yours....

oh lord. I don't have a strava but I am at day 363 of a movement streak with my apple watch so day 365 will be a fun milestone. i have nothing amazing in the fitness department to report that is new but at least i am consistent.

Consistency never fails. IMHO It’s the most difficult metric to master.

Of all these numbers, upping my days active is the one i feel best about because it reflects consistency. 365 days in a row is fucking awesome!!

I bought a fitbit Versa 4, thinking that the built in GPS chip would make it fantastic, only to find out that the complete mental morons who write the software had removed the auto-pause function (when you stop) feature in the bike exercise app. Who the hell removes a feature that pretty much every rider would want? It's totally mind-boggling that they would do that then to add insult to injury, refuse to add it back in! WTF!

365 days! Holy crap that’s baller.

Tapping out of the 2024 thread and am hoping I can get back to the gym 1/1/2025. Wife messed up her leg and can't really move around too well so the last few weeks been doing all the work that was split amongst two people and by the time paid work is over and then unpaid work is over I am too tired to hit the gym. Sigh to a hopefully better new year.

Caretaking is hard man. Do the best you can. Sometimes when life is wiping me out I do mini ego lifts just to feel good. (Two sets of curls and a few dips can do wonders.) No shame in exercise "snacks" just blow off a little steam. Fitness isn't an "all or nothing" game, hang in there. :thumbup

Thank you. Consistency is mastery. That's what @Banjoboy said and he was right.

Thank you. I looked at my watch and today will actually be the big day. I will be curious if Apple Health sends some sort of report of average exercise, etc., for me to check out.

editing to add a picture of my award medal thing.

stats for one year:
resting heart rate = 60 bpm
steps per day: 10,645
miles/day: 4.9
exercise: 61 minutes a day
stand hours: 15 a day
calories: 994 active

i’m in about the same shape overall as i was around the start of the year. not sad about it at all because i am a hell of a lot better shape than i was in january of 2023.

I don’t have a year end recap but I was lucky enough to get a spot in the Broken Arrow Skyrace 11k this coming June. It will be my first race (I don’t count the 5k turkey trot I did 20 years ago as a race). Running 6+miles up the Palisades Ski Resort is really appealing to me. My wife wanted me to do the 23k with her but she crazy.

I finally got up to around 20mph average on my 10 mile bike rides, that has been my goal since I started riding again back during the pandemic. Still doing 4 days riding a week, legs still burning for the whole ride. What I've found with some forced breaks is that when I have a recovery week I come back stronger following it.
