For you group riders - How would you react to this CHP stop?

You're operating a motor vehicle, so you have to show your licensed, but I guess I'm dubious on the reason they were stopped in the first place. She really didn't come up with a reason other than possible guilt be association. I would have given my license and been totally cooperative since she is already keyed up after their friends set sail on her.

Basic instructions are to pull over at least 100 yards apart. That at least a few of have chance to not get a ticket and or get away…..
Looks like his buddies decided to stop just not the way it was planned…..

yourube is full of vehicle vids like this where people know and assert their rights. Cops have been captured on vid saying to their partner "Hey Joe, we got one of them there sovereign citizens" then amping up the situation.

I think this is a borderline case and technically the rider was probably right but I'm not a lawyer. The cop did a decent job not to escalate but she was making threats in order to get compliance which is what they want and expect, constitution be dammed. She knew she lost the argument when she said he was "detained" (which has legal meaning) but she could not identify why or the infraction. In cases where things escalate to a forceable arrest courts have thrown out the case and sanctioned the cops because the cop failed to cross the t and dot the i even if violations were commited after the false arrest. The best part is the incriminating evidence is on the cop's cam and if they turn them off at key moments cases are tossed.

If I'm obeying all traffic laws while riding my legally registered and insured motorcycle and someone ELSE on a motorcycle rides next to me and does something illegal, I'm reading that the police have every right to pull me over and demand to see MY identification.

Someone ELSE felony evaded this cop so she is detaining two riders as punishment and some of y'all are not only cool with that but are taking umbrage at those who disagree.
 
You're never going to win a debate with a cop. Go to court if you want but that involves hiring an attorney, dealing with the stress, losing work time and possibly losing your case and having to pay a fine plus court costs and attorney fees. Everything gets amplified against you but not the cop.

Or, you can hold your tongue, keep your pride in check and lessen the consequences.

Kinda like how I deal with my wife when she's mad at me :censored:

That discounts all the videos out there of people asking for a higher-ranking officer who then tells the original cop to stfu.
 
I'm not cool with it, but sitting in a super vulnerable spot on the interstate and then possibly getting wrongly arrested for an incursion into the minutia of my civil rights from a LEO that is keyed up over the activities of my mates is not worth the time to "prove a point". I'd rather go collect on that free beer that Budman suggested. Not all civil rights violations are created equal.

Agreed. We all knew if was "Every man for himself, see you at the lunch spot" (or next planned stop) if red & blues came on. No reason for a half dozen guys all getting tickets. And yes, the guy that got pulled gets a free lunch (maybe dinner too). Doesn't always work that way, see below.

True story; a group of about 8 or us were doing a multiday ride- counter clockwise loop to Lee Vining, up to Chester, over 36 to Fortuna. One Rider was froggy and took off from the rest of the group to go fast) while were more into twisty roads, so stayed rather pedestrian and let him go. A few miles west there he was- pulled by CHP who got him on radar going the other way. Rider was an older guy, CHP mid 30's. We all pulled in behind the CHP car. Rider got his helmet off his 70-something year old head quickly when stopped to show he was an old fart. He also had his son's business card taped to his license- he was a PD Lt. No joy.

The CHP was cool to everyone and the Rider asked if he minded if he took a leak in the bushes 20' off the road, CHP siad sure. He does so, comes back and signs the ticket, CHP was chatting us up about riding up there and killer dirt bike spots we ought come back and check out. Ticket signed, Rider hands the ticket book and pen back to the officer who says, "Keep the pen" (because he'd pissed then signed w/unwashed hands)- we all laughed our asses off. CHP then told us where some cool "other" backroads were that, while not guaranteed, less travelled by CHP.
 
Honest question to those that agree with what this rider did...Why put up such a fuss about showing your ID when you get pulled over? Even if it is not a lawful stop, why not show the ID? I am genuinely curious.

Yes, cops can do so. They are "investigating" at that time, you are detained- not under arrest. Be sure to not talk your way into an arrest, be smart.

I would tell the cop that it was my last time riding with them, but I would not give names. I'm terrible with names. Plus, I don't really pay attention when people put helmets on, so it could be any number of people that were on that bike :dunno

I understand what you said, but we have been "free" for many many years and people have been showing their IDs during a stop for almost as long and we still have not turned into what you describe. So, why make your life difficult?

Because others allow their freedoms to be abridged in the name of convenience is no reason for me to.

That said, I'd have shown my ID, because it is probably going to be interpreted as a traffic stop. Now, if I were cited for anything I didn't do, we'd be in court for that.
 
I can see your point, Kind of like if everybody jumped off a bridge would you kind of thing.

I just know that the officer has the power in a situation like that and I would obey with a smile (cussing the officer out in my head). I have gotten out of many a ticket by being nice and respectful.
 
I remember a BARFette would respond to these threads with the phrase "It's one teeny tiny little prick in your ass. What's the big deal?" until it's a bunch of large cocks in there.
