When should we stop riding? -- perspectives of an older rider

At 68 I still find some giddy up time and that feels good of course. Just enjoying the flow is notched way up compared to my 20’s 30’s 40’s…. Shit. :laughing

I am feeling the age though. Fridays 100 plus degrees took a bite. At some point I suppose I will be very careful about avoiding that stuff.

Not sure when though. For now 100mph beats 100 degrees and my prep for it is at a different level than before.

This whole broken leg deal was / is a challenge but that moto flow is such life gold that it is making the work worth making it happen.

I sold my last sprotbile just before summer started, I realized the old adage that most accidents occur less than 25 miles from the home became a big reality when I moved. LG/Saratoga border before, Milpitas now.

The amount of idiocy I saw daily on my 1.75 mile commute every day was astounding. SUV in the left turn lane and suddenly realizes they need to make a right turn instead: Leave the left turn signal on, crank the wheel full right and stab the gas to the floor. Don't bother checking the mirrors or blind spot, other people have to worry about that. Seeing TCs on the way to work was 1-2 times a week...

I still ride dirt and have 4 of those, 1 plated for emergencies/zombie apocalypse getaway. Time to thin the herd, though, my 65 year old butt no longer fits the CR250 seat, it's like sitting on a splitting maul. o_O

My stepdad just sold his Harley last month, Mom was diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer's. His 92nd birthday was last week. He said he can't risk it, Mom is going to need him around now.

I hit 76 tomorrow, hope to ride until 80 and then reevaluate. Still love to ride, even if I know age is catching up.
A guy that I regularly ride with just turned 79 and his goal is to get as many rides in as possible before he has to give it up. We figure that it will be fairly obvious when that point is reached.

My motorcycle mentor is planning a coast to coast next year at 87. Foolishness I tell you but I’ll join.
...and my spouse thinks I am too old at 72 to go coast-to-coast again. My new mantra...Eighty MPH on Interstate 80 as an octogenerian. Has a ring of symmetry to it.

80 on 80 @ 80

Been riding since 1973, had a 2002 back then, so naturally I chose a Toaster Tamk. Here I am 7 bikes later on my GS. Retired and was riding the local backroads since I moved from the east coast. Quit riding for a few months as I had dropped the bike in a gully, it fell on me and cracked a couple of ribs. Long story short, went to hospital later with some breathing issues and they kept me. I had a lung embolism, blood clots in my leg and a blockage in my heart that required stent work. Never would have figured that out if the bike hadn't sent me to the hospital, so I credit it with saving my ass. Now my issue, I'm 77, have had MG since 1996 and am getting gun shy about getting on the bike again. I miss the riding, but am concerned about damaging my body and being a burden to my SO and being a handicapped old man. Any suggestions on deciding to keep it on or calling it quits?
