Bush to open national parks to mountain bikes
By DINA CAPPIELLO Associated Press Writer

Oct 14th, 2008 | WASHINGTON — The Bush administration is taking steps to make it easier for mountain bikers to gain access to national parks and other public lands before the president — an avid cyclist himself — leaves office.

The National Park Service confirmed Tuesday that it is preparing a rule to allow park managers in some cases to decide which trails to open to mountain bikers.

Once it’s finalized, the rule would take this authority away from federal regulators in Washington, who sometimes take years to decide whether to allow bicycles on individual trails.

A park service spokesman said the rule would be proposed no later than Nov. 15 in order for it to be finalized before Bush leaves office.

the half dome trails are already at capacity with a highway of people. this will exacerbate an already annoying circumstance. If they build new trails...great.

puhleeeeze....:rolleyes.....bikes get out soooo much farther than peeps hiking you'll barely know they're there......

until one comes flying down the trail and runs into the back of you on the way back out. :twofinger

That's GREAT !!! :teeth

NOW if he can just get those parks / trails that are designated Hiking/ EQUESTRIAN ONLY :wtf opened up...

have you even met anyone who has been *run-over* by a bicycle?......and they are not opening all trails....more than likely not the highly trafficked areas......that'd be recipe for conflict.....

so there.....blah.....:x

ME

sumbish knocked me into a bush and I got a stick up my ass....took 3 stitches in the right cheek....

pain: not too bad

idiot nurse TIGHTLY binding up wound when I was lying down (thus rendering it well nigh impossible to sit): a little worse

Having to walk 2 miles back home through suburbia with blood runnning down my ass, UNFORGIVABLE UNFORGETTABLE

I think the mountain bikes ought to be able to go on ANY horse trails...not too sure about the people trails....could be an incompatible use

I agree with the title change, "Bush finally does something right"

I forgot about him being a serious mtn biker, I remember an article about him riding a few years ago, written by a racer/bicyclist magazine editor who got to ride with him at the ranch. He had trouble keeping up with da prez on a ~25 mile loop, and most of the secret service guys didn't have a prayer :laughing

i have no idea how to respond.....except i'm giggling a little.....mostly 'cause a nurse wound your butt up to tight......that's actually funny...;)

and i promise never-ever to run over any hiker (well...maybe wazzuFreddo :twofinger)....cross my heart....hope to die and all that crap......besides, i climb better than i descend......and i'm all little and skinny......harmless..totally harmless....
