Ninth person pleads guilty in homeowners association racket

With the help of friendly homeowners association board members, legal work and repair contracts were funneled to lawyers and companies associated with the scheme at the expense of the homeowners, who were deprived of honest voting on their boards, court documents in the investigation have alleged.

The board members were straw purchasers elected by the co-conspirators through classic dirty campaigning that included conducting phony polling, hiring private investigators to dig up dirt on candidates, and rigging the balloting, the documents alleged.

When I was house shopping, HOAs were a deal breaker.

Most cities have an HOA you are automatically included in, it's called the planning department.
Think you can do what you want to the property and structure you own? think again.
as I am painfully finding out.

You can't opt out of that HOA, which is why its pure insanity to put yourself at the whim and beck of two HOAs. :rofl

everybody is aware that more than half of all new homes in CA are in HOA's, right? cool little way to get out from under city ordinances. hey, let's make the streets too narrow for two cars to pass each other, and we'll call them fire lanes, not roads!
brilliant!

in Vegas no less.

Don't let anyone know the truth of the HOA Mafia.

I agree with all of the folks who HATE HOA's. As the owner of Pit Bulls, I would NEVER buy anything associated with a HOA.

That's the drag about it - smart people wanting to stay away from HOAs are severely limited when shopping for a home. But then, with so many homes being thrown up in record time with the shittiest materials by the least-skilled labor, I'd question anyone looking to buy any "newer" home.

Across the board anti-HOA.

Well, I'm the VP of our HOA (cue Hail To The Chief). Around here it isn't too bad. We keep the road in good shape, repave, chip seal, whatever is needed. The pool and hot tub are kept well maintained. The gates are kept in good working order, as are the walls and lighting and whatnot. One thing some don't like is that cars get towed if left parked on the inside streets, as they are kind of narrow. But there is parking on the outlying roads around the general housing, pretty close and still inside the gates.

Generally, the assoc. leaves shit alone. We had a drug dealing issue 2 houses down from me for about a year and a half, traffic at all hours, 30 second visits from 15 people a night, you know the scenario, finally, the owner of the house was notified, social service was notified (they did this shit with their kids standing right there, might as well raise another generation, right?), and the owner of the house got them out (it was section 8 and the county got involved). Oh, paint your house earth tone colors. Keep your yard decent. Don't strip cars in your yard. That's about it.

Another plus, being the VP, I've got a complete machine shop in my garage, and my neighbor has a complete welding and fabrication shop. Nothing too elaborate, mill, lathe, TIG welder, bike lift, he's got MIG, TIG, plasma cutters, torches, saws, just the basics. All approved and in operation, basically as hobby shops, no production, no big industrial stuff going on.

Dogs. Well, there are everything from packs of chihuahua dogs, to pit bulls, to poodles to my German Shepherds. Most of the people in here (104 units), seem to like dogs, no issues yet, not even when one of the pits killed someones cat (keep your cat in your own yard and this shit does not happen). And everyone seems to be in agreement that dogs are a good thing, basically, loud burglar alarms, as we've had issues with burglars in the past few years.

It's not completely horrible. Our monthly assoc. dues are $75. $450? Fuck that. And mine get cut because of my service to the assoc., which amounts to maybe 1/2 an hour a month. I haven't been to an HOA meeting in months, since I work nights.

I'm sorry, but anyone who buys property with an HOA is an idiot.... fuck that shit.

I had no reservations 5 months ago about buying a townhouse in a HOA. Why am I an idiot?

Enjoy doing (or paying for) yard work and other maintainence on the exterior of your home. Also enjoy looking at that one neighbor on your street that doesn't give a shit if anything looks nice.

For my $198/mo I don't have to so much even worry about replacing the bulb if porch light burns out.
