I dont know how to embed you tube vids, so maybe someone can help me out with this one.

Johnny Cash cover of "Hurt" is absolutely moving. You can hear years of pain in his old voice. Also Johnnys cover of " I wont back down" is really good too.

Somebody already embedded Johnny Cash's Hurt cover.

He had a great voice and made a lot of songs more awesome.

For that last one, I wouldn't mind if you could replace the music with something more intricate:

that chick is rad. kinda reminds me that i'm doing absolutely nothing original..

Her solos during the show were just fucking unreal, she is amazing. He is good but she is the virtuoso.

Also, Prince in that video with Tom Petty and the HBs...so rad!

Primus does an excellent cover of The Devil Went Down to Georgia.

I have a TON of killer covers in my collection but not easy to share mp3. One of the rad covers I can recall was Metallica covering Schroeder from Peanuts at the end of a show. How can you not want to do the Snoopy dance?

Gary does a lot of covers I like.

The Placemats covering the song everyone else has covered:

May be stretching notable a bit here, but I always liked Stan's version much better than the original:

Social D - ring of Fire

Almost anything by Me First and The Gimme Gimmes, like Goodbye Earl

Well this thred is devolving quickly. (Marching bands, really?:x)

Generally, I hate covers. I think they're insulting. On the few occaisions I do appreciate them, I maintain strict criteria for my approval:

Whether the original was good or bad, the cover must mop the floor with it. You can't start with a superlative cover and just do a good imitation of it, which begs second point.

Cover bands must inject its own style into original. So, while I love the AIC w/G. Wilson cover (or Great White, etc.), it sounded just like Ann and Nancy with Heart.

Last, a no-name band should never receive any notoriety for a cover. I know it happens all the time band getting famous for a cover, but bands should do their own thing first.

A lot of the songs on this thread are just homages and don't meet my criteria.

Here's another cover of June and Johnny's Ring of Fire (it gets it, IMO).

^^^ you've got too many rules. The only rule: it has to sound good.

Everyone has the right to put their spin on a tune. Once a song is written its put out in the world for everyone to do as they please as long as the creator is justly compensated.

I like it when a no name does something awesome with a well known song. Having fame doesn't mean anything, look at Justin Bieber.

Maybe, but have you ever had one your favorite song rooned due to a butchered cover?:mad

No, no, no. This is actually one thing that copyright is good for.

Gary Jules' cover of Mad World, originally by Tears for Fears

tainted love - marilyn manson. its not the 'best' but I really like the different approach to covers he has.

That was going to be my other suggestion...
