Amazon getting owned for poor culture

Who has only worked there for a year. :laughing

Guy is a showboat, just trying to kiss ass and get his name in print.

Could be. How long do you have to work at a place before you form an opinion about its culture and how you fit into it? I prefer to get that out of the way as soon as possible.

Well first, if they really have 180,000 people, across god knows how many locations, how much is one person really going to see?

I mean it isn't like the whole company is going to be shitty. It's going to have good spots and bad spots, but overall, it might average out as being shittier than most, and he'd never know it because it's so damn large.

Given industry trends, it's likely that their search eng team is treated significantly better than most of the company. They'd have to be, or GOOG/FB/MSFT would poach them. Amazon is an operations behemoth, and that means that a huge percentage of the company is in non-technical, bean counter roles. I would guess that the experience of this type of staff is nothing like this guy's.

Wait, what?
So does that mean the person who wrote the Times' article made a snap judgement given the small piece they saw as well?

It seemed the culture of the organization is what is in question. The culture of an organization runs throughout it. What I saw of it made me step away. Not my thing.

One can only deal with the evidence/statements they collect :dunno

I mean it isn't like the NYT randomly selects one business every year to critique its culture. There has to be some worthy precedent.

Agreed. The culture at Amazon is unsettling and doesn't flow with other corp cultures. It's an interesting study when compared with their success.

What does Amazon invent? I see jobs there for engineers but do they do any engineering? I always thought it was a fancy Walmart.

A lot of the employees are on H1-Bs and L1 visa's. They can't just simply quit and find a new job without their new employers sponsoring them. Getting fired or quitting is essentially deportation for them.

Then they can find employment in their own country.

Amazon designs the Kindle. I don't know if they invented or bought the technology. They contract manufacturing to China.

According to the top manager I interviewed with they want to purchase all the music, TV shows, and movies they can and offer it as exclusive content on their platform. I imagine they have even considered purchasing video content produced by individuals. When he said this I kind of looked at him sideways because they would be going head-to-head against Apple in this regard. And Apple has a war chest that will bury them.

Time will tell.

Amazon does this and does it very well

IMO for a large company it's tough to nail down culture according to stories from a few dozen people out of 100K+. How an org works in one division that's working on brand new stuff can be very different than another org working on a cash cow division where breaking anything is really really bad. For horrible or awesome managers...that applies to any company.

Churn as in turnover? Over what timespan?

I always laugh when I hear employers say how important it is to "hire good fit".......Because when you look at all their LinkedIn profiles, you can see that the average person only sticks around for about 2 years anyway, so wtf difference does it make?

Plus, "good fit" usually just means "enjoys the same hobbies and sports teams as I do" :rolleyes

I remember something like over a span of 1 year actually. I may be wrong.
And the word 'churn' is used for employees regularly, I thought.

Those companies are called "meat grinders". They take you in, overwork you, and then burn you out. Then they replace you with fresh meat, eager to take your spot.

Haha, so true on the good fit.

A good fit just means a "team player". I've been on countless teams where a single workplace cancer just destroys morale and productivity.
