Daytime TV: predatory advertising on old people?

This shit's not just daytime, I see tons of those types of adds on networks like the NHL Network. Scams masquerading as real products, mostly targeted at ailments of our aging population and/or scamming medicare. Pisses me off.

we should sue toyota, honda, ford, chevy, every single car manufacture because they offered low monthly payments on a product that instantly loses value when you drive it off the lot, and then after a year of making the minimum monthly payment for a entire year and i decide to sell it i have to lose more money because what i sold it for is not enough to pay off the rest of the loan.

predatory advertising man. thats what it is...or we are just dumb and gullible and dont know how to manage our finances.

Yup - this or Hulu ... we rarely watch commercials anymore.

:laughing And you save time! 48 minutes for a 1 hour episode.

Been watching "Luther". British Detective Drama. 52 minute episodes. Guess the BBC doesn't need the advertisement $$.

Why do you guys hate capitalism? Why do you guys want a nanny state?

People should be exposed to products that will help them. They should have the freedom of choice to choose what they want to buy. People should be smart enough to know whether goods and services will benefit them in a fair exchange of cash. If not, then a fool and his money are soon parted. Another one: no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.

Soda, fast food, cigarettes, etc. You don't like them, don't buy it. Too old to make these descisions? Check into Shady Pines I guess.

So....once you can't make proper decisions you should.....make a decision to put yourself in a rest home?

Do you see any issues with that school of thought?

To be clear, I have no desire to stop advertising in any legal way. I just checked out of all of it. I don't listen to anyone's ad for anything. We live in the age of instant information. If I want something, I research (fancy word for google) it and then make my choices. I guess in my mind if you have to try that hard to sell me something it must be crap or way too expensive.

So my dad is ill (different story) and I've been working part time to help take care of him. Right now it's mostly being there to help with medication and around the house chores.

It's also a lot of him sleeping in and out of TV while I sit with him. I don't watch much tv but here it's on all day so I get my fix of whatever is on. Anyway, I'm HORRIFIED at the adds. It's literally non stop RX adds that are totally vague, the news is constant fear mongering, and it's like every add is a sham to trick old people. Computer cleaning adds so you don't get virus, security systems, politicians stealing your Medicare, more and more and more.

It's all anecdotal but it seems like every add is an add targeting worried old people and trying to take advantage of them. Everything is a disaster just waiting to happen unless you get this product/service

It's truly disgusting Kevin. We as a nation have really hit a low point.

How do you know these products will help anyone? They've never been wrong before?

All those fools and their money (and health) were sure parted, huh?

Why didn't they just...know better? :rolleyes

The BBC is funded entirely through a license fee; there's no advertising at all, which means there are no advertisements in or between shows, and no advertisers to appease or pander to in their reporting and programming.
It's dirty pinko socialism, but it's awesome. :teeth

You are correct, but daytime TV has been that way for AGES. I would venture to say DECADES.

predatory advertising is usually even more insidious when marketed to the black community. sometimes up to 20% more predatory.

Right, and the guvment fixed it, tobacco TV ads were banned 45 years ago as a result.

What is 'predatory advertising' anyway? ALL advertising is aimed at getting your moniez in exchange for a product or services. To me, lethally deceitful bullshit ads like those cigarette ads are the definition of predatory. Not Wilford telling me about Diabeetus.

Same reason golf tournaments on TV have so many Viagra ads.

Yes, when the knowledge that cigarettes were bad came out. How we do we know that isn't the case with the current pharmaceutical ads? Why should they be advertising something you can only get through your doctor?

The dairy lobby has done a great job of convincing people you *need* dairy in your diet (strong bones yo!). That is patently false (I expect no end of shit now). You do not need dairy in your diet. But, let's convince everyone they do and ignore the health misinformation and the negative environmental impact cows have.

Go look up the effects milk actually has on your bones. It's not good for you-it will actually strip your body of calcium.
