Experience with All Season tires//reducing road noise

Need new tires for the Accord. Tirerack ranks the P 0's All Seasons Plus on top. I am looking for all season tires that are QUIET on the road. I don't need the ultimate performer but something that will stay quite and have good manners on the road. Most driving on the highway and rarely canyon carving as maybe some or most people do on this forum with their cars. Looking for your input and experience with a/s rubber.

I hate how much road noise this car has. I want to put dynamat in the doors/floor or something to reduce it. When I drive the car (rarely as it is now) it is for extended periods of time so the noise becomes overwhelming after awhile.

Any other input on tires? Any input on how to reduce road noise? I've even read dynamatting (or similar sound dampening material) in the front wheel wells.
 
Turn up the stereo. :D

Everything begins to rattle. I swear to you, the window switches vibrate like crazy. This thing is nearly brand new and I've never heard so many rattles from a base-model honda stereo that weren't the speakers themselves.

I'm pretty impressed someone is complaining of a noise issue on a pretty new car... on top of all is a mainstream "everyone must like it" car so I never thought noise would be an issue. Unless there *really is something* with the quality on that model?!?

Road surface is usually terrible though, I'd give you that.

How are Continental ExtremeContact DWS compared to this Serenity? .. Hmm perhaps if Serenity are named Serenity... then they must be quieter?

(not that i have an answer for you. i had some yokohama dB tires which were quieter than some other tires, but not exhaustively tested.)

Not a fan of any Continental tires. Not a single one. The DWs are ok on a car with an aggresive alignment (more than -1 degree camber and lots of toe in to offset the inner wear). But on a conservative car, those tires start to cup wear and then get super noisy in a hurry. The DWS is pretty much the same story, but with less ultimate grip in the dry and a little longer life.

It doesn't help that the Sport has the 18" wheels so there's less to absorb the impact. Also the stock Bridgestones SUCK and tire rack reviews concur with that and put them worst the most tires they offer for sale.

I was commuting once a week to/fro Humboldt for school/work so I am often in the car for 3+ hours. That's when you start to notice the noises and shortcomings. The stereo vibrates the window switches and what I presume is the wiring harnesses between the door and panel. I have yet to investigate but I know when music is playing I can hold these pieces and the vibration goes away but I can still hear it from the passenger side door. The car is fairly solid otherwise but tons of road noise relatively. I am thinking some of the road noise is exacerbated by the worn tires which is true of any tire/brand after many miles.

I rarely drive in the snow. Maybe once or twice a year at best and minimally at that. I was seeking the a/s because they are a longer lasting tire. I used to run the Michelins Super Sports and they are fantastic but after 10k they get noisy and the milage/longevity after that is minimal. For $250/tire its a bit of a stretch for my 98% highway driving. They kill it in the rain though!

The Pirelli All Season Plus were ranked highest for UHP A/S tires. I found them online for $165 ea shipped to my door (tire rack wants about $200).

Never had good experience with the Continental tires either. The DWS' were rated good for snow but marginal at best on the dry/wet tests. Last thing I want is a tire that cups as it will wear on your suspension/parts faster.

The 2015 Sport is the best value car I found on the market and thats why I decided to buy it new...also one of the few remaining sedans you can find a 6MT in. So far my operating costs are about $0.038/mile plus gas, insurance, and depreciation which brings it up to about $0.36/mile combined for first year depreciation costs accounted for.

Alas the girlfriend hates driving stick so we will be testing waters to see if we will keep it and get a second car or trade it in for a new car with an auto (non-CVT) after hers is done with.

It has 36k miles from first year of driving. Now it sits in driveway as I don't need it for my extended commute and I ride the bike because BA traffic sucks.
 
I have a 2012 Accord, it's super noisy too. Just replaced the original tires with Michelin Primacy something or other (which was supposed to be the quietest), and no real change in road noise.

Used to have a prius, which was fairly noisy too. We replaced the original tires with Goodyear Comfotred, and it made a huge difference.

I like the accord, but I agree, it's way too noisy. I've considered dynamat and other things to reduce noise, but I'm too lazy & busy with other things to bother.

In the end, the noise reduction technique that worked the best was getting a lexus. :laughing
 
Stay away from the pilot sport A/S 3. It's a great tire but noise and has a stiff ride you can feel all the joints and tar snakes in the road. Aside from that they are great.
I really like the conti DW I have on the car now. Much quieter smoother ride and a lot of grip.

I'd love to have the Lexus. Especially a GS or LS. How does the Toyota's compare (Camry, Avalon)? Considered trading in the Accord but I can't rationalize the extra cost for a car I hardly drive now.

I feel the same about the dynamat. Plus the stuff is stupid expensive. I want to do the door and the floor at least in the front of the car. The car is great when the back seat was stuff to the brim when I was moving. The audio resonance in the back is insufferable.



I pulled trigger on the Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus tires as they were rated the best UHP A/S tire and the P Zero and Centiguo (sp?) have the lowest road noise and best feedback of the group without going to a summer tire. They weren't ranked well in the snow but alas, I'm not driving in the snow other than the main through ways when I visit Tahoe the 2-3 times over the life of the tires. They had a $60 rebate that ended yesterday.


Still debating throwing money at something like Dynamat or Hush mat to resolve some of the road noise.

Quality cars usually have a lot more sound insulation than a lighter economy car. It's kinda like the question on how do I make my Ninja 250 faster? (Buy a Ninja 600).

But sometimes you only have bank to reasonably afford the 250 but have the skill to bore it out and boost it with some extra power. In this case it would be I have the skill and resources to sound insulate it better rather than take a loss and buy a newer expensive car.

I don't think there's anything wrong with what you're proposing to do. I may not understand it because cars that are too quiet in the cabin freaks me out but I'd say your efforts are a far cry from trying to make your car something it's not, if that's kinda the suggestion from the above poster(s).

I think getting an accord to be "too quiet" is nearly impossible without spending a fortune on getting the whole thing wrapped in 2 layers of dynamat.

I want to drop the DB levels a few to make it marginally more manageable and reduce fatigue.

I drove with ear plugs once and it was godly. But alas it's illegal and a pain in the butt! I drove a Saab 9-5 wagon and it was buttery smooth and quiet at 80mph. I could turn on classical music at a low volume and enjoy. The volume I have to have in the honda would never let that happen unless I was in stop in roll traffic.
