This thread will be used to post informative podcasts about the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak and COVID. These are aimed at listeners who would like fact based information and discussion about the new coronavirus that is causing the current global pandemic.

The first few posts will be ones that I have already posted in the 'Corona Virus are you ready?' thread in the Kitchen Sink. This is highly recommended listening to help sort out the wheat from the chaff from the usual media outlets of your choice.

Here is this week's episode of the virology podcast TWiV which is SARS-CoV-2/COVID19 centric…

http://www.microbe.tv/twiv/twiv-591/

Earlier in this thread I had stated that asymptomatic spread had not been proven with the data at that time. However, Raplh Baric, a coronavirus expert, suggests that this could be the case, I presume based on additional evidence.

Most of the topics in this week's podcast have been discussed in this thread. For those who are interested in why the CDC failed in supplying test kits you can jump to 1:25:23 where a listener with information has written in and provides the details.

There have been a number of questions raised and discussed in the last 24 hours...

The latest podcast from This Week in Virology (TWiV) http://www.microbe.tv/twiv/twiv-592/ discusses many of them in further detail. This really is a great resource to sort the wheat from the chaff supplied by the media at large.

The latest episode from This Week in Virology has been posted. Again coronavirus centric. The first 53 minutes has fascinating insights from a clinician, Daniel Griffin, currently serving on the front line in NYC. The healthcare professionals will find the information very useful so highly recommended listening for you folk. It also explains why TP might not be a bad thing to have, seriously...

This Week in Virology has released two new coronavirus centric podcasts.

First up is a special with Mark Denison a pediatric infectious disease physician and coronavirologist. Fascinating insights and introduces a subtle way of thinking about virus infection a little differently. He also discusses his work on drugs against coronaviruses.

Second up is a regular style podcast that answers a lot of question by listeners. It covers many topics that have been discussed in this thread plus some other concerns that have been raised including the potential of coronavirus transmission via the mail.

The This Week in Virology podcast has released a special with Ian Lipkin.

http://www.microbe.tv/twiv/twiv-special-lipkin/

Dr. Lipkin is the John Snow Professor of Epidemiology, Professor of Neurology and Pathology and Cell Biology, and Director at the Center for Infection and Immunity internationally at Columbia. He is recognized as an authority on the use of molecular methods for pathogen discovery.

Ian is currently in the midst of suffering from COVID-19 and he talks about the issues surrounding the disease and SARS-CoV-2 including limiting transmission, antivirals, vaccines, and much more.

This Week in Virology have posted their weekly episode...

http://www.microbe.tv/twiv/twiv-595/

The first 35 minutes are, in my opinion, critical listening for those in the medical field and others who would like to know more about patient outcomes. Dr. Daniel Griffin took time on his break from working in a NYC hospital to talk about what's currently going on at the current epicenter of the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak. Some really useful and fascinating information.

Immune 29: Immunology of COVID-19

The 'This week in' series has another coronavirus centric show from their Immune podcast. I'll say this up front, it's a podcast that focusses on immunology, which is quite a complex topic, mostly because it has a language of its own. However, there is some very useful information about how SARS-CoV-2 is causing disease and why COVID is fatal for some...

TWiV - 596

Another great episode from the TWiV podcast...
https://www.microbe.tv/twiv/twiv-596/

This weeks covers a range of topics including the FDA's emergency approval of hydroxychloroquine and using plasma from recovered patients as a treatment for COVID.

TWiV - 597

A new TWiV podcast has been released; A lot of immunology and some COVID-19 with Jon Yewdell

There is a lot of immunology (the discipline that studies the body's response to infectious diseases) discussed in this episode, which increases in complexity as the conversation with Jon Yewdell progresses. The podcast touches on concepts of immunology in the context of viruses with some coronavirus overlap. Fascinating stuff!

TWiV 598: Who was that masked man?

The latest TWiV has been made available to day. Daniel Griffin provides more essential information for healthcare workers in the first half hour of this podcast and the TWiV crew continue to discuss questions from the listeners.

TWiEVO 53: Virus evolution by land and by sea and by CoV, part II

Here's another coronavirus centric podcast from the This Week in crowd. This Week in Evolution (TWiEVO) is one of my favourites as it brings together many disciplines that uncover the genetic basis for what we see in everyday creatures or plants. Episode 53 of TWiEVO discusses SARS-CoV-2 from an evolutionary viewpoint, giving great insights into why this new coronavirus is considered a single species and tracking its global spread.

TWiV 599: Coronavirus update – we need a plan

The midweek coronavirus update from TWiV is available. The hosts discuss another potential anti SARS-CoV-2 compound, ivermectin, an anthelmintic that's typically used to treat for parasitic worms. They're also searching for an exit strategy plus a whole range of other useful discussions.

TWiV 600: SARS-CoV-2 – enter the Coronials

In TWiV's 600th episode Daniel Griffin is back from a NYC hospital parking lot to provide his latest insights of treating COVID; fascinating stuff. The rest of the team discuss a 382 nucleotide deletion in the SARS-CoV-2 genome, a scenario for emergence of the virus from a bat, followed by answers to listener email.

TWiV 601: Das coronavirus with Christian Drosten

Another special episode from TWiV where coronavirus expert Christian Drosten joins Vincent to provide a view from Germany on COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2.

There's more great information in this latest podcast. Especially how Germany have handled their outbreak so far but how to tackle releasing lockdown measures and what's needed to do so.

TWiV 602: Coronavirus Immunology with Stanley Perlman

In TWiV 602 Stanley Perlman, pediatrician and coronavirus expert, discusses immune responses to coronaviruses, including seasonal CoV, MERS, SARS, and SARS-CoV-2, plus prospects for a vaccine. This is a great reference point for what to expect as vaccines start to be developed for SARS-CoV-2; it might be a long journey.

TWiV 603: Cloudy with a chance of coronavirus

More great information in episode 603 of TWiV from Daniel Griffin at the epicenter of the US outbreak in NYC. He provides some eye-opening information about new symptoms but also how the treatment of COVID is being approached. Also, Vincent rants about the proposal that SARS-CoV-2 was engineered in a lab. They also cover the seroprevalence study from Stanford that the media have picked up on. My personal critique of that paper can be found elsewhere.

Immune 30: Immunology of COVID-19, part two

More excellent discussion of the immune response to infection with SARS-CoV-2, including use of steroid, coagulation in some patients, cytokine storm, and vaccines in Immune episode 30.

TWiV 604: Oral poliovaccine to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection

Here's a real curiosity, could the oral polio vaccine help to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2? In TWiV 604 Kostya Chumakov discusses the hypothesis that oral poliovirus vaccine can provide non-specific protection against many other viruses, and might prevent infection with SARS-CoV-2.

TWiV 605: READDI for the next pandemic

Remdesivir seems to be having some success in the treatment of COVID-19. In TWiV 605 Ralph Baric, Mark Heise and Nat Moorman discuss their non-profit initiative READDI, Rapidly Emerging Antiviral Drug Discovery Initiative, that was partly involved in the development of remdesivir and is starting to make drugs now for the next pandemic virus.
