Construction on 36 - BARF

Per Caltrans, it seems that 36 is closed on weekdays (except for a few hours a day) for construction for a few miles just west of the Trinity/Humboldt county line. Which means it’s open on weekends, but with - I assume - a stretch of gravel.

Has anyone ridden 36 lately, and if so, how’s the construction area? I have a new Wee that isn’t really set up for off-pavement use (no skid plate or crash bars). Are we talking 4-inch-deep gravel here, or fairly smooth stuff?
